Nova Teachers Not Paid

Nova's worst nightmare is now a reality. As of 3pm yesterday, it appears that Nova was unable to pay all of its instructors. A note from Nova stated:

Regrettably, it has not been possible to complete all the necessary operations to deposit instructors salaries on September 14, 2007. Salaries will be deposited by September 19, 2007. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

Can you smell the bullshit? This is eerily reminiscent of the "technical glitch" that caused the staff's pay to be delayed. Somehow, over this 3-day long weekend, Nova is going to come up with the money. What the note confirms is that Nova is insolvent. There's no money in the bank.

Unless Nova comes up with some concrete changes to its business model (and we haven't seen anything beyond hiring more teachers and closing some schools) and you can expect paydays from now on to be uncertain.

P.S.

Sadly, Let's Japan went offline around 2:30 yesterday. I haven't thoroughly gone through the web logs, but my host confirms that the site was flooded with a massive amount of traffic that forced them to shut down LJ before it crashed the server. Hopefully the worst is over.

From what I heard at work (Nova) it was mostly the trainers who didn't get paid. They gave no prior notice, just didn't pay them. Let me translate a part of the carefully worded Nova message (above) for those of you who aren't fluent in BS (the primary language used at Nova).

"It has not been possible to complete all the necessary operations to deposit instructor salaries on September 14, 2007." =
"We don't have enough money to pay all instructors and will not be meeting our contractual obligation to do so."

I wonder if Sahashi has been collecting his 6 MILLION yen monthly pay check that he generously gives himself??

This is a translation of the letter Monkey Bridge wrote to the Japanese staff. Notice, that he never sent one in English to apologise to the intsructors! Show's you what he thinks of them;
28th August 2007

I really understand what’s going on within your branches. Since I understand how difficult this is for you, I want you to know that I too am having to make difficult decisions. I feel sorry that I have to ask for your support in this current situation. As you know the past few months have been difficult, especially August, which is usually a difficult month anyway as it’s in the middle of the year. Yet we still managed to get through even that. Everyday I feel very very sorry for the situation yet I am also very grateful for those of you who are working hard everyday in the frontline.

Everyone has lost trust in our company and in order to regain that trust we have been looking for any possible way to merge with other companies, in order to raise funds. In order to protect thousands of students we have to get through this difficult time by ourselves (insert Japanese metaphor about – something about the wind blowing in autumn – possibly “things should get better from now”) Due to Obon season our efforts to rebuild have been hampered, however now that Obon is coming to and end there is light at the end of the tunnel.

As you know I previously quoted from Yoakemai (Before Dawn) by Toson Shimazaki (a famous Japanese book). The title of this book is quoted in both the Old and the New Testament, which means the time right before sunrise is the darkest time of the day. People say that before God gives people new duties he must test them and if you pass the test then God will give you large responsibility. So, when we get through these difficult times, I believe, that God will give Nova more responsibility. As a result I want you all to believe in our ability, and have the spirit to endure, these difficult times. I believe that significant number of Japanese people can speak English as a result of Nova leading and making the foreign language school industry popular. Because of this, Nova must continue to exist, in order to ensure this I am doing by upmost. I also need you to help me by doing your best and taking pride in your work.

I feel so sorry that I have always been telling you to just hang in there. However, since we are facing this kind of difficult situation, this time I would like to give you some words to inspire you. Another country is interested in Nova’s Ochanoma Ryugaku system (giganet) which is the only one of its kind. They want to introduce this system within their country to solve the regional difference in the quality of education. Sometime in the near future, the introduction of this system will be considered just as important to the infrastructure of this country, as the Shinkansen is to Japan. If this comes to pass, we will be able to sell this to hundreds and thousands of homes. I am not just saying this for the sake of it, we are already in negotiations with this country. The Ochanoma Ryugaku system, which isn’t so popular in Japan yet is extremely desired around the world outside of Japan. This is all I can tell you so far as the media have affected our ability to successfully merge with other companies and we can’t run the risk of them doing the same here.

People say when it rains the ground becomes hotter therefore more sterilized (Japanese methaphor relating to the next sentence – I guess “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”) We are in a very difficult situation however companies that face failure become stronger that those who have never faced failure. We need to learn from our mistakes in order not to make the same mistakes again. For now all I can do is to beg you to hang in there.

Monkey Bridge

Excellent! This is the "God fax," right?

The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them. -Albert Einstein

Shawn
Let's Japan.org::Blog

Yeah this is the God fax. He's kinda mad so it was difficult to translate but that's the general gist of the situation! It's seems we have Moses and Jesus on our side! THat and some mysterious "other country" lol

Tohoku and Chubu union members were all paid.

As everyone is now fully aware...NOVA is slowly decaying corpse! The reason for this is the loser President Sahashi. Apparently he has gone missing lately...calls to his office have gone unanswered! He expects teachers and staff to put on a happy face for students, while at the same time doing nothing himself! He is one for the most two face pricks ever to live! I hope he commits seppuku!!

WITH THINGS IN DIRE STATE I DID THE ONLY THING I COULD I WAS LUCKY- I WAS PAID ON TIME AT A BRANCH SCHOOL IN OSAKA- SO TODAY I CLEARED MY ACCOUNT AND LEFT- GOOD BYE CONSTANT NOVA HEADACHE-
IT IS BETTER TO LOSE 2 WEEKS PAY THAN SIX WEEKS IN OCT. SHALL THE COMPANY LAST THAT LONG.
BEST OF LUCK.
SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS- TYPING FROM MY PHONE- SOMEWHERE IN JAPAN...

Regular instructors have been paid.
ATs and BTs have not.
No fax of any kind came to my branch or those of any of my friends.
No apology of any kind.
Was informed by phone by my AAM who seemed downhearted.
Was told that the money should come by Wednesday.
He said that in Wakayama regular instructors had not yet been paid.

I left Nova as well. Who is going to work for free? Good luck to all who think you'll get paid!

Kyushu teachers were not paid, many have decided to call in sick until the pay comes through. We feel bad for our students but we cannot work for free. Staff are freaking out because they have to lie for Nova.

Tohoku? I'm from a Tohoku school and I Wasn't paid. Did you mean Tokyo?

were not paid

Our fax was address to those two areas.

I just noticed that Chubu got told the 19th as a pay date, while Tohoku, Chugoku and Shikoku got told the 18th! Weird.

Guys. Im just a nova hack with three years up soon and I got paid. Im a kanto boy. Anything I can do to help?

Are you people trying to tell me that half the country didny get paid? I heard it was Nova AT only! Come back!!! Say What!!!! Where is trhe fucking union in all this? Who's going in tommorrow?

I was told MultiMedia got paid first along with central Osaka and Tokyo, pretty much everyone else didn't get paid. I was also told they may stagger payments with newer teachers paid first and titled instructors last, I guess the staff will miss out again for the third month in a row.

My last day was the 15th. Luckily I put in my notice to quit September 1st, before the pay fiasco. I only gave 15 days notice, so was given shit, because I didn’t give 1 months notice. Fuck that! I haven’t respected this job, company nor most J-staff or ATs and above (many exceptions there are some really cool trainers and staff) since my first month. The job is fucking joke! We play games with little kids and have the same simple monotonous boring fucking conversations 8 times a day. And you can’t tell me that when you tell Japanese people you’re a NOVA teacher, it’s not super embarrassing.

NOVA Bots
The people in charge got their promotions and very modest pay increases by being company whores and putting up a front that this whole thing isn’t a fucking pathetic excuse for a job or a career and by ratting out people who did. These sorry ass fucks keep secret files on teachers and in this company the more shit they write about you the “harder” they are working. If people want to take this sham of a job seriously that’s fine, but most of them have to step on others to move their way up. And often they won’t talk to you about a problem they just document it. And by the way, most of their girlfriends or wives have been or are their students. So all the fucking NOVA Bots who invested themselves into this ruse of company are going to be shit out luck and out of a job by the end of the year. And that makes me laugh out loud.

J-Staff
Though I have little respect for most of the J-staff I’ve met, I feel quite bad for them. They work long shitty hours, their pay is shit and they don’t get paid for working on their days off. (Technically it’s company policy for them to fill out a form if they work on a day off to get and extra day’s pay, but if they actually did their manager would become irate. None of them fill out this form!) Also, if they are having a bad sales week, they themselves will actually buy shit: books, points and shit like that so they don’t get yelled at by their superiors. This is true, I hang out with (and hooked with) some J-staff.

So their job is shit, but that doesn’t excuse the resentment and shitty attitude that a good deal of them have shown me. I’ve had some of them tell me NOVA is “too good to teachers”. Or that teachers are lazy, stupid, rude, etc. I guess which is true in many cases, but the fact is they work a really shitty job and instead of having beef with the company or their bosses they take it out on us. I know being completely docile to your boss and being a company slave might be part of Japanese company culture, but you can’t expect people from any other developed country to play that game.

Anyway this a pretty negative rant, but for real the last 10 months have been a blast!
I have made a lot of great friends; teachers, staff and students. I’ve worked in central Tokyo and Osaka, living in these places has been awesome. I’ve never taking the job seriously whatsoever, so I had fun and just messed around the entire time. I broke every rule in the book and teased everybody who took the job seriously.

So I got real job now, not teaching thank god, but I doubt I will see my last pay check. NOVA is prioritizing who gets paid. OSAKA and TOKYO, teachers, ATs etc. I think their lowest priority is to give money to those of us who have quit. They have long list of people they owe money to, so if you quit you’re probably not going to get your money. But then again you might not get paid again even if you continue working.

Whee, noone was paid down here either. I think most of us are waiting until Wednesday morning to see if the money is in the bank before jumping ship.

With many teachers still waiting for their pay to come through... This is what I am thinking;
I've got nothing to do tomorrow... If Nova fails to pay employees their promised wages for LAST month, I am going to do some old fashioned picketing. I have friends in Kyushu, I used to work there and One told me on Friday "This is Bull... I have 600 Yen, I have to ask my Japanese girlfriend to lend me money"
This is not a responsible company. If anyone is willing to picket NOVA head office in Shin Siabashi in Osaka, I am game. I am going to prepare a press release to give to any media outlet that shows up.
Hopefully I can get a Japanese Translated version as well to present.
I think it is only responsible to give them until 2:00 p.m. to make the deposits. I will be informed, when this does or does not happen.
So come Three--- If NOVA doesn't pay... I am going to set up shop with a Sign...
Anyone coming with me... (if we do this at three there is a good chance that we can make the evening NEWS and the morning papers)
Please pass this on to anyone you know who is considering action. Time to make a move guys. And the Osaka teachers who did get paid are concerned about those of you who did not. We are in this together.
Post this anywhere you think it will reach concerned Employees.

it is disgusting that nova appears to be getting away with this. where are the union? this could have been their opportunity to really show us what they are made of, instead they too have gone MIA.

we got the same fax over in Nara.. suppose to be paid on Tuesday.. but we'll see.. I'm out the door if I don't get paid.. I'll come join the protest in Osaka.. this is bullshit!

THIS IS A BAD SITUATION-
PLEASE CONTACT ME THROUGH THE NOVA GROUP OF JAPAN - FACEBOOK SITE.
ANYONE THINKING ABOUT COMING TOMORROW AND WANTS TO HELP GO THERE-
I WILL GIVE PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION USING THAT SITE AND I AM WAITING TO BE VARIFIED BY SHAWN- I HAVE PUT IN TWO REQUESTS ONE AS GOODBYENOVA AND THE SECOND AS ACTION.
PLEASE CONFIRM ME SHAWN IT WILL MAKE COMMUNICATIONS EASIER.
THANKS.

Shiga and kyoto areas are expecting pays today..the 18th.
Its hard to be positive and we all know our CEO is a @*! %
but even he couldnt be so stupid as to fax a message to schools without having the funds to support what he says.

For the sake of all the teachers who are out of pocket...lets hope he is true to his word. I think its the first time hes put himself on the line to the actual teachers of the company...so things may be ok

until 3p.m today im gonna be positive...but if he dosent live up to his word...... i would encourage all teachers to walk out...

that way 2 things could happen...We will all get fired and be able to claim unemployement benefits straight away
or
With no teachers available ..students wont be able to take lessons...more claims...more refunds...more legal action...Nova will fold and consequently teachers will be able to recieve unemployement insurance straight away!

Take a holiday...go home for Christmas
Or use the time to regain sanity and maybe a new job

But hey, if theres money in the bank tomorrow Great! It buys us all a little more time......because i think its safe to say: the writings on the wall........the body is not moving...its time to cut the neck and put this pink long eared pric out of its misery...once and for all.

Good luck to everyone
I aint gonna miss that bell that rings at the start and end of every class.
But im sure gonna miss this 18 year old level 5 sweet heart that still has trouble pronouncing the word cook.

I worked at NOVA for a year awhile back, before moving on to a small, foreign owned school in Kansai. It went under after a bunch of shifty paydays & rumors. The NOVA situation sounds very familiar to me. Where there's smoke there's fire. You need an exit strategy.

We (teachers & staff) were able to negotiate a buyout with the owner of one of the buildings. He could kick us out & lose, or pay our back salaries & we'd work for him. He took our offer. But this will not work in your situation.

My advice to you is collect all the names and numbers of students who take your lessons & make them YOUR students. Private-like. Your students are worried. Comfort them. You will come out of this as your own boss and making more money than teaching for NOVA. Start immediately; you have no time to lose.

cheers,
D

"I’ve never taking the job seriously whatsoever, so I had fun and just messed around the entire time. I broke every rule in the book and teased everybody who took the job seriously. "

You suck.... you can't even spell properly - check your first line again. Nova is a declining company with a bad image because there are so many dicks like you working for it... quite clearly their screening process is not working.

Some of the Nova students have never been abroad yet their English is amazing - the system does work to some extent (though it's far from perfect). People like you, who don't give a f*** about anything but themselves are the reason foreigners in general, as well as Nova, have a bad reputation.

Feel free to bitch away at me and anyone else who respects Japan and their work and good luck with your 'real job'... hahahahaha... I'd like to know what that is!?

I can cofirm that Nova HQ is located in the same building as the MMC so is in Namba, not Shinsaibashi. However, payroll is located in Shinsaibashi which is right on Midosuji. It is next to the Korean Embassy which always has a cops riot van outside. I really hope you guys get paid today as you earned that money. Ganbatte ne!

Got paid!!!

Whoah dude.... you "hooked up" with the J-staff?! Man, you're my hero. I wish I could be as cool as you. That just lends so much credibility to everything you say.....

Sarcasm aside, THIS asshole right here is the reason why working for NOVA sucks. It's not the upper management... it's not the staff.... it's not the students. It's instructors like him.

"Feel free to bitch away at me and anyone else who respects Japan and their work and good luck with your 'real job'... hahahahaha... I'd like to know what that is!?"

"hahahaha" is right. I got a job as an executive recruiter making double your NOVA salary, which you probably will be cheated out of next month. It’s not that I have a problem working hard, but to dedicate yourself to such an obvious sham of a company is foolish.

So keep on respecting your job, even when you’re working for free. And don’t forget to make sure your top button is buttoned, and your shirt is tucked in when you’re chasing toddlers around a kid’s room trying to prevent them from wiping boogers on the wall.

My AT told me that people some Tokyo teachers have received eviction notices from their NOVA apartments, because NOVA has not been paying their leases.

At 10a.m Today My pay was in the bank

All you guys expecting to be paid on the 19th...its looking better than worse.
The president has kept his word...at least to our area.
Good Luck

And to the guy bagging the remaining Staff and Teachers of Nova
Put your name out there brother...let us know who you are.Let us know your new job...so we may follow in your footsteps... If you are such a big shot who doesnt give a shit about anything......
Its usually shit that cant give a shit.

Actually my job before Nova paid me a lot more than double my Nova salary! But ive still enjoyed being in japan . It cracks me up when people quit Nova and then crap on about how sweet their new jobs are. One guy I work with at Nova used to be a criminal lawyer!! i bet he made a lot more than you do now. So get off your high horse, most people just come here to party for a year, Nova is just convenient.

I work in kyoto city and was paid today! I hope the unpaid are as lucky tomorrow.

Well it seems that the teachers who were promised pay today have gotten it. At this time action would jepordize outstanding debts, so action is to be delayed.
I wrote the press release and I am trying to organize. My first concern is the people who were not paid. As of Wednesday at close of Business all teachers are to be paid, if this does not happen Thursday will bring action at NOVA head offices, both of them; the one in Shin Sai and the one in Namba. Apparently Payroll is done in Shin Sai and Main Office is in OCAT? Can anyone confirm this?
I invite your questions and comments and Anyone authorized to post this on the End of Nova Thread please do, I am sadly still waiting on authorization...
Please authorize my account Shawn, GOODBYENOVA or Action.
Regards Randy.
Facebook is a good place to organize as well "Nova Group of Japan" I will respond to personal e-mails from that site as it is more secure than posting my contact info here.

"Whoah dude.... you "hooked up" with the J-staff?! Man, you're my hero. I wish I could be as cool as you. That just lends so much credibility to everything you say....."

I'm just saying I've dated some J-staff, and that they have told things they don’t tell most teachers.

And it’s funny that you blame other “assholes” like me for NOVA’s troubles. In the eyes of most staff and management you are more of a product than an employee or teacher. You are your instructor number. I caught on to this my first month here and that’s why I could not possibly take the job seriously.

I worked with a lot of haters like you, who get stressed over meaningless NOVA bullshit, and they see a guy like me come in carefree and get along really well with the students and it pissed them off. Why does it make you so angry? Are you jealous because I have personality?

executive recruiter is a pretty shit job, actually. nothing at all to brag about. the hours suck and pay does too if you're bad at it. which i'm assuming you are since you can't even spell right.

You hooked up, yeah yeah, ok
Look some of the stuff you say is correct, some people who work in upper mangement are total tools and comany "yes" men and there is a lot of bullshit, I admit having the same conversation 8 times a days blows, but the only real currency in this job, the only thing worth any money at NOVA is the rapport bwetween instructor and student. I know from past experince when 2 other branches I workrd for closed down, and the first thing many students wanted to know was where certain teachers were being transferred, they wouldnt commit to changing branches until the J-staff you hooked up with told them. Plus, you read any article about language schools in any of the english newspapers and they always sy the same thing. When asked if an english conversation school was worthwhile, most students replied " It depends on which teacher you get". You obviously were crap. Good luck with the recruiting job, though I too have heard they are shitty shitty jobs.

"executive recruiter is a pretty shit job, actually. nothing at all to brag about."

Saying a job is better than NOVA is hardly bragging

Are you a Union member?
If not, you'd better join...

No use crying "WHere is th union" if you're not a member

All regular teachers that I know in my area were paid today and my AT is supposed to be paid tomorrow. Assuming that happens, we might all be in the clear for a few weeks.
Any thoughts on what to do about next month? I have to assume that, unless something drastic changes financially for Nova, things will just get worse... staff payday, our October payday, staff bonuses and October pay...

If you are getting double the pay you must have been pulling pretty shit wages at nova.....

Or pulling yourself one or the other.

If you were paid today, count yourself lucky and get your resume up to date and start sending em out because next month will be worse I think, NOVA had no money this month, cant see that changing any time soon.
(Im still waiting to get paid)

I'm a Nova student. We, students are also worry about you all... I hope Sahashi pays tomorrow...

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR POST TO TEACHERS.
I AM ALSO VERY WORRIED ABOUT THE TEACHERS WHO WERE NOT PAID-
GOOD LUCK AT THE ATMS TOMORROW GUYS.

Apparently if the company fails to pay on time twice...its possible to take some type of action. Im not exactly sure but ive heard its enough reason to be able to quit and find yourself able to collect unemployment insurance pretty much immediately.( can anybody verify this?)

Lets all hope Mr. Sahashi can pull another pink rabbit out of his hat so it doesnt come to a visit to centrelink...oops i mean hello work (heh heh)

"So I got real job now, not teaching thank god"

LOL. Recruitment Consultant? Headhunter?

Yeah, I thought so. You realise those guys are lower on the gaijin ladder even than NOVA teachers, right?

Sorry all, but I`m getting tired of the self-important BS running through this thread - and just about every other thread and blog on the net dealing with NOVA.

The Japanese staff did not get paid at all last month, in many cases. Many did not get paid this month either. Did any of you NOVA drones give a damn? People who have lives, people who have families and bills to pay, and careers with your company lost out on a bonus that they were budgeting for AND are waiting for back wages. Did any one of you bat an eye?

Students who have thousands of dollars of their hard-earned money invested in lessons stand to take huge losses. Do you care?

But, ye gods! MY PAY was one bloody business day late, so it`s time to take to the streets! Call in sick! Go to work drunk! Call the media! Call the Union! Bitch about racisim and institutionalised apathy when no one in the Japanese Media seems to care that a bunch of people had to spend a weekend sober.

Get over yourselves.

Got paid? Great, good for you. Take your office staff to lunch at Yoshinoya.

All the anger should be channeled towards the main culprits in the scandal

Namely Monkey Bridge and his cronies (Hans Kruger etc.)

They are the ones with millions lining their pockets
And they are the ones who directed the ripping off of students
And they have been squeezing teachers and staff

Where are they now?

obviously we batted an eye when we heard some staff werent paid...
obviously we batted an eye when schools were sudenly closed....
obviously we batted an eye when we recieved eviction notices from aparts we had been supposedly paying rent on

obviously we batted an eye when our pay was actually 4-5 days late

mr. who cares what would you do in this situation?
If your sickk of reading about this and cant offer any advice

PISS OFF

Pay 5 days late, still no pay, what's doing? Teachers here have families too. We're vunerable because we're in a foreign country. Don't compare.

Some teachers in kyoto still not paid. Regardless of our feelings for the company and its overlords, I do feel very bad for those, BOTH staff and teachers, with families to support. This has go to be the most difficult for them.

I second that "Piss off"

Most instructors do really give a shit about staff, students, and other instructors. That doesn't mean that we will sit silently when the company refuses to pay us. If you had posted something about your pay being late you would have only been given support.

Holding back people's pay is inconvenient. Not giving any prior notice nor a solid indication of when pay will be deposited is disrespectful and is likely to piss people off to the extent that they call in sick. Granted the company is in a bad situation but poor people management is the really killer. Would people have reacted differently if they were treated with some respect and told about the delay BEFORE pay day? Or even given an apology? I think some would have. I guess the moral to the story is people don't like it when they are not paid, they like it even less when they are treated like idiots. Who would have thought?

Thanks for you message. We hope the company stays alive so you can take lessons. Despite a few bad apples, most Nova instructors really do care about students. I hope everything works out well for you too.

Oh, sure alot of people feel bad for the staff.....they got paid 2 weeks late for 2 months...well, MOST of the J-staff are part-time..their wages are in line with those paid at McDonalds or KFC. They could easily quit and find another job...instructors CANNOT quit and find another job soo easily, as we are only qualified for language instruction only...our work visa will allow us to work in other fields of employment...we CANNOT work at McDonlds, KFC, 7-11 or AM/PM or some other low wage paying job...legally.
BESIDES...most J-staff I know live with their husbands, mommy and daddy...and also with their grandma and grandpa...maybe a brother and sister or two. So, I SERIOUSLY doubt any J-staff will be evicted from their parents homes and be starving on the street. Thats NOT going to happen!! So, if J-staff if bitching...they should get hold of a copy of "Town Work"! They can easily find another bullshit job!
WE instructors do NOT have any family in Japan to live with, to feed us, or care for us...MOST teachers have to fend for themselves here...we have NO right or little protection under the law here.
I dont give a damn for these retarded and ignorant J-staff!!

"You realise those guys are lower on the gaijin ladder even than NOVA teachers, right?"

NOT POSSIBLE

oh man this really sucks. I'm suppose to head up to Japan to work for Nova in november, but I just received a call from a guy at the recruitment company who interviewed me. He told me that they're having serious concerns with NOVA because they haven't been paying their employees and they're not sure what they plan on doing. I'm waiting to see weather or not it's still going ahead. After reading all these comments it's hard to keep my hopes up :(

All Nova branch trainers and block trainers have had their pays delayed again. They say Friday this time. First they were told Tuesday, then Wednesday, now Friday... Not looking great.

If you're still around reading comments, please try and register again. LJ gets a fair amount of spam bots tying to register and I think I deleted your accounts while cleaning up some spam. Sorry about that.

Let's Japan.org::Blog

I HAVE COMMITTED TO ATS ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT I WILL VOICE THEIR CONCERNS TOMORROW- NO MORE DELAY.
NOVA IS INSOLEVENT AND PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.
10:00 NAMBA NANKAI STATION.
IF YOU CAN MAKE IT PLEASE COME.

I AM TRYING TO ORGANIZE PLEASE LET THE TOMORROW AT 10 MESSAGE FILTER THROUGH THE END OF NOVA THREAD AND ANY WHERE ELSE.
YOU CAN EVEN BLOG ABOUT IT TO HELP. IF YOU NEED TO CONTACT ME LOOK ON FACEBOOK- THE NOVA GROUP OF JAPAN.
IT WILL BE EASY TO FIND ME THERE.
WE SHOULD TALK...

If you hate "retarded J-staff" so much why did you work with them for however long you've been here? Or maybe you've just been tolerating Japanese folks while you earn your paycheck. When it comes to people like you, I'm glad the party's ending. Maybe if there were fewer selfish folks like yourself, the Nova Union would have gotten on it's feet way back when, we'd be due paying teachers, and probably have a paycheck or at the very least credit from the union. Thats how it goes: stand alone, die alone.

For those of you that still have a soul, good luck out there.

So true! I wonder if this clown is a spotty loser with a "Charisma Man" syndrome. You get what you give. I've had a a lot of fun working with the Japanese staff in my branch, always great to work with. Try some empathy and understanding. BTW, they DONT understand "American" if you speak slowly and loudly. Go home.

Hmmm, hope that's not on a commission basis or at a Japanese company. With so much simmering disrespect for the locals how long before you loose your swagger? Hope your hair is well gelled and your overpriced designed suits don't chafe too much while you sit in your little salaryman bubble.
Me, I LOVE getting paid to sing, dance and be silly with kids! I GET PAID TO PLAY!!!! To each his own, I guess.

We've got to Believe. If we work really hard and cooperate we can pull thru this and become better people and a better company. I know management has made some mistakes, but they promised they have a plan. I have faith!

NOVA is the best!

I might not get paid much, or I might not ever see pay from them again. But I get so much trim working at NOVA. Mostly from the students, some a bit older than me, but most are many years younger. Staff too! And occasionally some of the female teachers, if they’re not too heavy. I’m reluctant to change schools, cause I’ve yet to meet another teacher who pulls as much arse as I do from the work place.

Please god let us make it thru this NOVA crisis.

"I GET PAID TO PLAY!!!! "

Not for much longer. HA HA HA!

"All Nova branch trainers and block trainers have had their pays delayed again."

KARMA

This is the last mail that you will receive from me; This is a futile exercise - you will never be able to see beyond your own narrow, selfish viewpoint.

Try to realise though that this 'sham' of a company was caused by people like you in the first place. It's funny that during your page-long rant you hardly mention the students - do they deserve instructors with sh*tty attitudes like yours??

Read your first posting again; it's all... 'me this... me that... I didn't like this... but I had fun in Tokyo... hooked up with the J-Staff...'
No one can take you seriously.

Good luck 'executive recruiter'

(ps. Can anyone smell a bullsh*t title as well?)

You know how the money deducted from our pay for our apartments was not going to rent, right. Well this is also true for our insurance. My roommate broke his foot five weeks ago and still has not seen any money from JMA. He called them about 10 times in last 3 weeks, because his bill was really expensive and he needs the money. Finally they told him that all reimbursements from JMA have been frozen until further notice. They wouldn’t tell him why, but we are assuming JMA is also broke or NOVA has not been paying JMA.

So don’t get sick or injured!

Your friend should contact the media and the correct authorities about this and have the people who signed off in this illegal activity sent to jail.

Please urge your friend to call the General Union for advice on how to proceed.

I have had problems with JMA in the past especially after they did that magic number with InterGlobal. Reimbursements have taken up to two months for me well before any of this nonsense began. Give it time. True, you might be on to something but I called their offices after reading your post and everyone has flat out denied that this is the case. There has been a lot of denying of things that have come true recently however. Hope your roommate can ride it out a few more weeks and that your suggestion isn't true. If so, Nova will be facing even more lawsuits. Guilty as sin, yes. Just hope the claim is fully processed to your roommate's favor.

Amen to that, brother.

for an update. As of today, no Titled INstructor has been paid. We are told that we'll be paid on Tuesday. However, this is very similar to the boy that cried wolf! I just hope the wolf comes and rips the bunny from limb to limb sometime soon. That I'd pay to see ... if I had any money!

Here Here! Although I do know some that really do need their jobs and I feel sorry for them. The rest that use it for money to buy cute shoes can go and jump

Just another day at the ofice!

Today I spoke to my AAM.
They said that basically they were quiting at the end of October.

They had had enough of reassuring teachers about their jobs when they themeselves hadnt been paid on time.....

At 3p.m A fax was recieved addressed to Titled Instructors
They will be paid on Tuesday the 25th....10 days late

A student commented on the closure of our school

Another student asked about the training new teachers recieve before teaching at nova.

A fellow teacher said he had to cancel a trip to thailand because he is unsure if he will have enough money to live for another month without pay.

1-J-Staffer said she was unsure about the meaning of regretable.

Its all over bar the official announcement....

A fax was sent out today, from MonkeyBridge(and this one was thankfully in English) stating that the worst was now over and that there should be no problems with next months salary payments. Thats good.......but it didn't mention anything about the titled instructors payments.

I'd like to confirm the FAx that was sent out today.

Is this the FAX you mentioned above?

Please let me know.

Not sure, only saw the english version and my kanji aint that good

Yep, that's the fax, but the English translation was sent to be posted in instructors' rooms.

A light at the end of the tunnel?

This weekend ill have no light in my apartment because im 5 days late paying the electricty bill.

Guess why?

I work at Nova in the Tokyo area. The only people who didnt get paid where the managers. Now, the word is Tuesday everyone will get paid. If not I will be one to go on strike.

Guys,

I worked for NOVA for 4 years up to July just gone. I am now an Executive Recruiter, It really isn't as bad as some of you say it is! But I'm not here to rant on any miss-perceptions that some of you may have.

I am really concerned about my ex-colleagues, Japanese, foreign, some new, some not so new, some with families to support, some all by themselves. I count my blessings I got out in time.

NOVA is a victim of amatuer leadership, at all levels. Only the "yes" men get promoted, and many of them then go on a power trip and behave like little Hitlers (maybe that was a bit harsh...maybe not...). I knew people who were nice, friendly professional instructors, but not long after some of them got promoted they changed and became unfriendly, aloof, unprofessional in their dealings with instructors and really (at times) not so pleasant. They developed a habit of manipulating anything that was said and making other people look and feel bad. It turned out that some of them had no interpersonal skills, or rather, that they lost them just to tow the company line.

Withholding and manipulating information seems to be a trait admired by the "big wigs" in head office. And, when you do want to contact the top everything turns into a game of chinese wispers as things are relayed up and down the chain of command...

If you go to most successful large corporations you will see that a free channel of information is kept open through all level. All employees right down to the lowest level are respected and treated as such, and the people at the top are open to new ideas from anywhere. I and other people I knew were even scolded for daring to make a suggestion in NOVA, to the AT's and Trainers at branch level or to the top!

The moral of this story is, I guess, any company who with holds, manipulates or rejects information, the life blood of any business, is doomed to fail. And this has become evident with the recent failures to pay staff and instructors and most notably with the failure to notify them sufficiently.

NOVA's product is not bad, that is evident by all the students who really enjoy taking lessons and conversation classes (although the Kids programme needs to be re-thought, but don't get me started on thatone...!). If it can restructure, change it's business practises (though no holding my breath there!) there is no reason why it shouldn't stay in business and become a better company.

Having said that, any of you who want to make a switch from English teaching can easily do so. If you have a valid visa all you have to do is change the status. If you are successful in finding a different job, that company will have to write a letter to immigration to apply for a grant to change the status. It only costs \680. Nothing is impossible.

I sincerely wish all of those still in NOVA the very best of luck for these uncertain times.

Ganbatte Kudasai!!

nova receive huge advance payments by students, and owe 6 weeks wages to teachers as well as rent etc... i doubt they're coming anywhere close to meeting sales targets right now, so without a massive cash injection they're fkd, and with all the bad press they're hardly an attractive investment.

but hold on a second. after nova go bust, the government is going to pay 80% of salaries owed, right?

and u get 60% of your wage for up to 6 months through the employment insurance scheme with only a 2 week stand down period (cos they broke ur contract through no fault of your own)...
so all u really need to do is pick up a few privates and spend the winter on the slopes or checking out japan...

I work at one of the branches on the Tobu Tojo Line and a few of the branches are planning on shutting down. As for my branch, work is normal, people are coming in for lessons, and everything seems to be fine. However, Tuesday is D day. If employee dont get paid then we know for sure that Nova is done for. At least I think so.....this would be the 3rd time nova said they would pay...We shall see...pray for the best guys.

What's the names of the gaijin upper management types at Nova? There are two main ones, I know. Did they get paid? I'll bet they did. These guys are the lowest of the low: they were complicit in the systematic screwing of the foreign workers at Nova from day one - and they are foreigners themselves!!!!!!!!
I know one of them is a little guy from Sweden and the other (good god!!) is an Englishman.

Someone should be calling these guys up and asking very pointed questions. For instance, "Hey, mate, you couldn't lend me the money for my rent, could you? Cheers."

"I know one of them is a little guy from Sweden and the other (good god!!) is an Englishman."

Not all Englishmen are tainted with the same brush as this one!!!!

Your post is very polite and well spoken so I'm not going to slag on you. Just a point of misunderstanding.

When you say it isn't as bad as you think, are you referring to the company or the situation?

I can see where the mis understanding comes in, sorry about that.

I was actually referring to being a headhunter: A few people had posted some derrogatory remarks about them, I was simply defending my new profession.

The situation in NOVA is indefensibly dire, and the running of the company before this current sitiuation all started was less than professional, less than amateur, even!
