Teachers Paid, Japanese Staff Not, and Another Fax

It seems that Nova is starting another round of paycheck woes. Titled instructors were finally paid on Friday but sadly, the Japanese staff, yet again, will have to wait for their pay. The only reason anybody got paid is due to Sahashi putting up 9 million of shares as collateral for a loan. So nothing has changed and everyone is back to worrying about where their next paycheck will come from while Sahashi continues to struggle to keep Nova alive.

According to the Times Online, some teachers have had enough and have gone on strike:

An unofficial strike by British and Australian teachers of English in Japan appeared to have succeeded last night as hundreds of staff at the country’s largest language school were paid for the first time in six weeks.

Until yesterday Nova, which employs thousands of Westerners at its 900-strong network of language schools, was thought to have owed outstanding wages to 2,500 teachers. Despite victory for foreign employees, about 2,000 Japanese staff remained unpaid last night.

Financial analysts believe that Nova may be on the brink of collapse, and it still faces a late wages bill to its Japanese staff of about 800 million yen (£3.4 million).

Sahashi has also sent off another fax encouraging teachers and staff to hang in there.

In the fax, he refers to 216 and 613 which are most likely the dates February 16, 2007 and June 13, 2007--the date Nova was raided by METI and the date METI punished Nova. He says his efforts to make things right did not work out and that he takes responsibility. He expects to have good news soon, and that everyone should hang in there and wit a bit longer. How any teacher can see this fax as being anything more than a pile of crap is beyond me. In keeping teachers and staff in the dark about what's going on and delaying their pay, Sahashi has squandered any goodwill he had. Barring a miracle injection of cash, Nova is on the verge of collapse. The teachers can't possibly tolerate another delayed paycheck and more empty promises.

It was likely only the part-time japanese staff.

NOVA was raided on Feb. 14th, not Feb. 16th.

Titled instructors were paid 13 days late, not 6 weeks late. everyone is paid in arrears and the standard pay date is on or about the 15th of the month. that is to say, you are always paid for the previous month on or about the 15th of the current month. this is made clear to everyone on their contracts and in orientation. every instructor is aware of this.

but the point is they were paid late. Because really, what is the difference between 13 days and 6 weeks when it's that late. The damage has been done. "on or about" the 15th is in the contract true enough, but 13 days late is not "on or about" at all....

Not justifying, clarifying. no one at NOVA gets paiment for 4 weeks, everyone get's paid for the first time in 4 weeks every month, up till this year anyway. it simply sounds inflamatory. Belive me, as one of the affected people by this delay i can tell you it wasnt easy going unpaid for two weeks, being lied in writing 4 times, and expected to do a lot of extra work with utmost enthusiasm. I am just as angry as anyone who wasn't paid, but I do have a choice on how to react. No need to let the bestial instincts of revenge and bitterness get the best out of me. Not that i havent thought about creative ways of disintegrating the usagi in front of HQ and the like. all the rats are jumping ship, and the incredible turn around in people who were basically licking my anus to become ATs up till a couple weeks ago is amazing. I don't expect to be paid ever again. But i don't put all my eggs in one basket either. There are plenty of opportunities in this country for people who actually wish to break a sweat working. just look at all the other foreigners who don't teach english here, they're doing fine cuz they actually WANT to WORK. NOVA goes under? so what? Livedoor went under, Enron went under, and NOVA will not be the last eikaiwa to do so if it comes to that.

Given how soon confidential faxes get posted on the net, it's no wonder he isn't disclosing anything. The only problem is, we don't know if he's bluffing or telling the truth. Given his predilection for deception, it's only natural people are worried.

Nova is a public company...
they are in the world of pain.. they appear to have no money not paying teachers.. and staff...

If Nova had a white knight investor then the company will only benefit in revealing ASAP the rescue offer...
from who and the offer made....

delaying any news like this is just an effort to prolong and stretch out the crap.. making teachers and staff feel like they have hope.....

not to mention students.. if staff arent paid by mid next week.. you can expect the media to go a little more crazy.. students cancelling will increase and the demise of nova bought foward..

Anyway I wonder if the deal Sahashi is working on might fall through if it's leaked, and that's why he's keeping it secret.

Friday Oct 5 will be the day of judgment! It doesn't sound any better that it's a Friday. If it is bad news then most head office staff are on their days off the next day. AAMs too probably. I expect a late announcement, perhaps 6:30pm.

For all you paintball fans, on your last day before resigning, take a flag from the front of the school. Small recompense for being f*cked by the company, but at least you can tell others that you "captured the flag"!

It was the full-time LS and CS staff that was paid. i agree that the key is that only some of the Japanese staff was paid, but i just think that people really should know the facts. When you are posting please remember that Shawn works hard to post facts not rumors. It's really hard going into work everyday hearing the latest news and worrying you're not going to get paid or have job next month, trying to separate rumors from fact only makes it harder. Sahashi is keeping us guessing enough, we don't need to add fuel to the fire.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion but if you are in fact as 'high' in the Nova chain of command as you profess I would like to express how a lot of the 'grunts' feel. I haven't been able to turn down my AT offers fast enough. Anyone who desires to be an AT is even more stupid (in my opinion) than those that choose to keep a token position that imposes a lot of extra responsibility without any real benefits. The fact that people like you are promoted into, as well as retained in supervisory positions is a primary cause of low instructor retention, which along with corporate dishonesty are the root causes of Nova's current crisis. Your delusions of self grandeur amaze me! Licking your ass? What are you?? An AT yourself? a BT? an AAM or even a RAAM? What does all that really mean other than pretty soon you will be working alongside the rank and file for the same salary as a rookie when this ship sinks. That is assuming you can get off your high horse and apply for a 'mere teaching job'. So whatever type of 'Assistant' position you can claim to hold whether it be AT or Regional ASSISTANT area manager doesn't hold sh*t in the real world. If only Nova management had the ability to plan as far ahead as those "rats" that are jumping ship then maybe the company would not be sinking as quickly as it is! (Some management schools tend to refer to it as 'strategic planning' a concept obviously lost on upper management as well as those titled instructors still licking brown in the naive hopes of being 'rewarded' by the company at a future date). The fact that you are divisive and cannot support or even reassure your subordinates in a time of real crisis shows the extent of your 'supervisory' capabilities! I do however agree with your remarks about inflamatory statements! I would just like to remind people that many of us rely on this site and by exaggerating or outright lying we only hurt those that depend on and trust us. You're right, the METI raid was on the 14th. I take that the 16th is a reference to the date the information became public.　I feel like I'm going around in circles writing about Nova. Teachers get paid, some don't. Staff doesn't get paid, some do. Nova is out of money, Nova scrapes together a bit. Nova gets sued and sued again, and sued again. When are they going to pull the plug on this mess?

We all know the reasons most foreigners stay with Nova. It's the same reason I am still at Nova. Because it's NOT real work. It's work for those that need an income and don't even remotely care about teaching. Hell, I don't even care about my students: my aim each lesson is NOT to try and improve their English, but to avoid getting a complaint. Most people are here to get away from something and Nova was the easiest/quickest way to do it. I don't want a full time Job that matches my qualifications; that would be real work. This is meant to basically be my working holiday. I'm still with NOVA because I want to collect unemployment insurance at the end of it and not even have to work for 90 days.
Nova deserves what's coming to them. But the people that are really going to suffer are the new teachers that Nova is still lying to to get here.

What is a real job for all of you teacher haters out there? NOVA is a place that, if you actually put in the effort you can get something out of it. It just sounds like all you haters out there wasted your time and are forced to watch this demise.

Don't leave the students out to dry. Don't take advantage of their good will. It's sad to read all this because at my branch things are going well. The students are actually showing up in droves and we've had quite a few visitors. It will be sad to see it all go, if that is the future. Still I show up to work because teaching matters to me. Yes, I take my teaching seriously. I'm also an AT and don't really worry about the money thing. I know what I want to accomplish and I'm doing that. If some of you take a proactive positive role to things maybe your situations would feel a bit better, and maybe when looking for a new job you might find you actually acquired useful skills.

Unfortunately it sounds like some people out there really have wasted his/her time, and have nothing to really show for it. Sad. Get over yourselves and move on. NOVA management fucked things up. Doesn't mean you have to be unprofessional. I'm out.

Yeah, those ATs sure are pr*cks! I mean, I remember the time I came in to work wearing a Tshirt and shorts, all sweaty, and my AT says to me "dude, next time you come in, make sure to be wearing a tie and a dress shirt", and I was like "f*ck that, they dont pay me to dress professionally!"
And then there was the other time, when I called a student a "b*tch", cause she booked into a lesson of mine about 3 hours beforehand, and the AT asked me to keep personally critical comments (about students) like that to myself. Who does he think he is? I mean, that student had no right to book into my lessons. I dont get paid to do that!
Oh, and I cant forget the time I got 3 complaints in one day for doing free cons about my new phone! What! I just wanted to spend 120 minutes of other peoples time talking about my phone. They paid me great money to do that. Well, when my BT spoke to me privately about it, and kindly offered to help out if I wanted any ideas for planning lessons, I thought "Man, what an asshole. How dare he offer to help me with teaching ideas? Who does he think he is?"

I mean, jesus, everyone knows I am the greatest teacher at this company, and they had nothing to offer me except ways to actually give the students their moneys worth. Yeah, I do feel bad for the new teachers that come and are screwed from the start. At least for people that have been here for awhile you have made connections and stuff like that but the way NOVA is still bringing new people given their current situation is just wrong. Unless by some miracle they get their act together.

As for the job itself I guess the good and bad is that its what you make of it. If you want to slack, you can but people who want to teach can teach too. So "teachers" that want to teach can, and those who couldn't give a sh$$ could also

So maybe I went a little too far by saying Nova is not a real job. But the truth is it's usually the first choice for any native English speaker who doesn't want a real job. No doubt you can get something out of it, and if you're at a branch and you get to know your students and really see the fruits of your labors. However, I'm at the MM center and we don't often see a student more than once in our lifetime. I suppose it's working at the MM center that really doesn't feel like work.

I have been reading some of the recent posts and there appears to be a dispute between some Aussie and American contributors. As an impartial observer from the UK, maybe I can offer some arbritration assistance. If you require my help, please don't hesitate to ask for it. However, I must say that the anger with which some Aussie posters are attacking America and Americans is, quite frankly, disgusting. We all know that the inhabitants of the world's only superpower are predisposed to mouthing off ignorant little diatribes of absolute shite. As loud and thoroughly annoying imbeciles, they do not have a choice in what they say. The glorious mantras of "God Bless America" have been drilled into their heads from birth, much more deeply than a 7C NOVA class on Car Rental. This must be considered before one attacks them. One must have pity... And one should never go in for the old cheap shots such as mordid obesity. Only 40% of the population is morbidly obese, and I believe from reliable sources that it is glandular and not down to shovelling all that greasy f***ing shite they call food down their gullets. So, no more xenephobia. The world must unite and be at peace with itself, despite all the hurdles placed in front of us. Thank you.

If Americans are superior to us Aussies, then why did they make the worst teachers in my branch? Egotistical and illogical, they were a nuisance and a burden on our branch. They have the same contracts as the rest of us, they sign them like the rest of us, but they question some of the rules, they refuse to work as a team, and then they wonder why the world dispises them. I had one American taking a toppatsu because he "sat on his balls". Only an American would think of such an excuse to toppatsu. Mate, if you don't like the contract, don't sign it and do the rest of us a favour and don't work for the company. It is plain common sense.

Having said all this, not all Americans were wankers. I had a few Americans who actually had a good work ethic and were a great example to the newer teachers. Unfortunately, these Americans were few and far between.

For anyone else still working there (if you can call it "working" at this point), I am thinking EXIT STRATEGY, best way to quit. I am very creative to throw tons of wild sh*t my last day, so don't need help there. Trust me... ;)

I mean, what's the best way to quit, and get all your remaining holiday pay and every yen of your money? It takes forever for regular holiday request to go through. Longer then I think NOVA's remaining existance is.

I'm not severely cash-strapped or anything, just want to do this cleanly, on principle.

I know the sooner, the better... nobody won't get sh*t from them if they wait til they close the doors. I'm thinking of using, what they call in their manual, "Emergency Absence Leave", which is immediate paid holidays, granted by claiming an unspecified "emergency" (makes sense since NOVA is in an emergency). After my little emergency holiday, I'll resign immediately after. Seems best method... anyone else thinking of their options there?

And is it true it's closing doors as early as November, that is what a Tokyo business consultant says?

I didn't read each and every comment to this post but I've read a number of comments from this and other posts and I realized that there is another side of the problem that people haven't been talking about: extremely late payment for former teachers. I have 3 friends who last worked for Nova in June and have yet to receive their final paychecks that should have been issued in July. That's over 3 months late - and I don't think they deserve to be paid any less than current teachers do!

Alright aussies and brits...I want you to stop eating your vegemite and meat pies for a minute and ponder as to why you even teach English...Oh yeah its because America stepped into WWII and saved all of your pathetic british ASSES and i wont even get into the whole Australia thing because honestly the world doesn't even realize that it exists other than a crazy crocodile man and Dundee, who were made famous where exactly??? oh yeah America...So if you want to bash us..fine everyone does...envy is a bitch...but just remember that if it wasn't for us, you would be speaking German....

As with all places there could be a student or two that you wouldn't like to meet unless you had to but on the other hand it was great meeting students often who really wanted to learn and to see them improve over time. It will be one thing I will miss.

Yeah, it is easy for Australians to get work in Japan compared with Americans; this may have something to do with America being the only first world country to not offer working holiday visas; personally I think that's a disorder in American foreign policy, not something Australians, Canadians and Brits should be apologising for.

Actually:

America is frequently rated as one of the worst first world societies to live in; poverty is highest, social mobility is lowest, the minimum wage is the lowest, the gap between the rich and poor is the largest, drug-abuse and unemployment are the highest and most importantly, well-being is the lowest.

When I visited America, I was quite surprised to find it very similar to Japan; workers over there are treated in much the same way; unemployment and homelessness is strife; streets are dirty; buildings are falling apart; that kind of thing. Oh, and the bread is awful.

I don't mean to bash the States - it's nowhere near as awful a place to live as Japan; and there is a lot of good coming out of the US (San Francisco was a fantastic city; people are really friendly (which is your best asset, US!); some theatre, cinema and arts are fantastic; the Latino culture there is fantastic; American cinema and music has had important impacts on the world); but, its the last place that I would want to live in because of various reasons. Compared with the ease I live with in Australia, America just seems so awful. I come from a poor community in Australia but I was able to go to a good university, eat well, live overseas, travel alot, be educated, be happy. I don't think I wouldve had the same oppourtunities had I grown up in the states.

actually, i came from a poor family in america and have been able to travel to several different countries. i have got to study with many famous american think tanks and attended a good university. the american dream is all about doing better than your parents, and i think that that is quite easy to do in america as long as you work for it. also, you probably visited some large american city which isn't representative of the entire country...just b/c you visited a place doesn't mean you understand it or can make an appropriate judgement. i'm sorry but you are ignorant.
