Stories about dodgy eikaiwa practices

The Fat Lady Hums a Few Bars

It turns out that the fax Nova president "Nozom" Sahashi sent out telling everyone not worry was a lie. Titled instructors still have not been paid, making pay 11 days late. The cruel irony is that they were given a payslip, just not the money itself. Ha ha, very funny. Isn't that illegal?

The New Zealand Herald: Japanese cash crisis hits NZ tutors

Hot on the foot steps of the CTV report yesterday, is an article by The New Zealand Herald. There's nothing new in the article, but it gets the word out to Kiwis that working for Nova is a risky proposition.

CTV: Canadian teachers unpaid in Japanese ESL woes

Remember Randy, the guy who protested by himself in Osaka? Well, CTV, Canada's largest privately-owned network, has picked up his story. Consider this another nail in Nova's coffin.

Some Canadian English teachers are among the thousands of worried workers left without prospects and paycheques in the wake of vast financial problems for Japan's largest private language school.

Nova Group, which has 900 schools, employs about 7,000 foreign workers -- more than any other Japanese company.

The Fat Lady Gets Ready to Sing

It is just about over for Nova. On top of Nova's cash flow problems, pay for the Japanese staff has been delayed, pay for the teachers has been delayed, schools are being closed (evictions, actually, for not paying the rent) and now teachers are faced with the prospect of being evicted from their apartments through no fault of their own.

Still Not Paid

If you've been following the massive "End of Nova" thread in the forums, you will have read that . How much more BS can teachers take? If there are problems paying teachers, can we expect the staff to paid next week? Will they continue to put up with pay being late again? I imagine teachers and staff feel like this right now:

The Growing Unease Over Nova's School Closures

As mentioned in this post, Randy was out in Namba this morning waging a one-man protest. The Sankei Shimbun was there and this is what they wrote.

Nova Faces Massive School Closure

Now the shit is really hitting the fan. It was bad enough for Nova that getting punished by METI in June forever branded them a dishonest company, but with media reports saying that they are looking to close nearly 200 schools, Nova is now a dishonest and financially struggling company. Great PR work, boys.

Namba 10am

I spoke with Randy who has been posting in comments and he is pissed off and not going to take it any more. He'll be in Namba at 10am tomorrow (September 20) to wave a placard and protest Nova's non-payment of salaries. If you are in the area, show up and lend your support. If you have a blog, cut and paste the news articles from here and let everyone know that Nova is insolvent and not a viable company to work for.
