Putting Your Stick in My Honey Pot
You would think that friends would stand next to you, help you and support you in creating a new school. They would be there to help out with lessons and handing out flyers...but what the hell do you do when they start giving students lessons of a different sort...I don't wanna come off sounding like a NOVA manager or anything like that..but what would you do!?
After several years of working in the eikaiwa world, I was finally given the opportunity to be my own boss. I very well off student/business man offered to help start my own school as partners. Without going into to much detail, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. Most people would kill for an opportunity like this, and I took it. Now I faced the eikaiwa world from a different point of view--I was now management.
Unlike most of your fast-food schools, my school (I believed anyway) had a lot more to offer. One of our advantages was that we held events, once or twice a month (Parties) for students, teachers and friends to meet and speak English. Sometimes, my school would take care of the bill, other times there would be a fee but the teachers, and foreign friends were always free because they would be bombarded with Japanese students speaking to them in English (Or so I hoped although it was not always that way) It didn't matter, as long as everyone enjoyed themselves.
Most of my students (Actually all of my students) were either kids or older ladies. The kids obviously didn't come to the parties, their parents however would. The older ladies often enjoyed the parties, and friends of friends would fill in the rest of the gaps. It was also a time to introduce new people to my school to show them that it was also about having fun. Well, what happened when I got a cute, younger lady as one of my students--nothing at first, and then came one of the parties.
I made sure to tell my friend (A substitute teacher on paper, but he's not ever worked actually since I don't have THAT many students) The first thing he asked was she available. I told him not to make any moves, that this was my student and my means of putting food on the table. Knowing the pattern my friend has with girls, not surprisingly, I got worried.
Here comes my question to all of you out there reading this: if you were in my shoes, or his shoes what would you do?? We all know NOVA's reputation for keeping students and teachers apart to avoid issues like this. I didn't want to be that kind of person. I figured that as a friend, asking him to back off from trying to pick up this new student of mine would be OK. That his pecker shouldn't come before the friendship that we had, because knowing his pattern (He thinks he has falling in love, and thinks that she is in love with him he does everything humanly possible to bed her, including telling her he loves her and blah blah blah!!...The finds little things to pick at, and finishes things with "I love her, but I am not IN love with her." Or "We were just not meant to be, I guess.") will get me into trouble.
If you ask me, I would have backed off knowing that it was only a sexual attraction and that the only that would come of things is a broken heart, and a student lost. As for everyone else out there, I wonder what you would do.
Anyway, after asking him not to take advantage of the parties for his own carnal pleasures he has. He asked for her number, as did other people (Japanese ladies and guys) and he invited her to have drinks and pizza the following week (Actually today, as I write this.) What he didn't know, is that his invitation to have pizza was translated by me. The student came to my lesson and asked for me to translate the email. I knew about he didn't know that I knew. SO I figured I would play a little bit. I made arrangements for a party (With friends only) at a local bar when I called him, he said he had a cold and wouldn't be able to make it. When I offered to drop by his place to give him some medicine, he said that it wouldn't be necessary, trying his best to keep me away.
Anyway, in the end he is on a date with my new student. Whether my student knows it's a date, or knows of his intentions, I don't know. What I am royally pissed about is that he went out of his way to keep things from me, and to try to court this young lady, even though I asked that he NOT do it. At the party, he promised not to do anything unless she approached him first. I figure, if he falls in love with her (I mean REALLY does) then who am I to stop that. BUT, when his getting laid takes precedent over my keeping students at the school, I think that's back-stabbing but maybe I am just looking at things from a management point of view, and what I really hope to achieve from writing this, is the opinions of others out there. Do I refuse to invite him to other parties, do I confront him angrily about being a backstabber, do I just accept the fact that all us guys put sex above friendship,or what?
The way I see things is that he should have just left things alone, and respected the fact that this student was a means of income for me. I think, unless he was truly in love with her, that he should have had no contact with her (Or very little) other than at the parties. As it stands now, there's a chance I will lose a student, one way or another. Either he breaks her heart, and severs all connections (I've seen it happen at other schools). Or they do get together and she gets tutored by him or something along those lines. Either way, I get FUCKED out of a student. This is all of course, if she actually falls for him.
So tell me everyone, what do you think!? Give it to me straight. Am I an idiot, or am I in the right to be pissed!?
Comments
You are right to be pissed.
You are right to be pissed. Your "friend" is a jerk.
Bedding students is bad for
Bedding students is bad for business and unprofessional. Friend or not, this guy has cost you and if I were you I would cut him loose. In terms of business and professional ethics you should get this codified in your employment contracts for your employees. Sounds like there are too many swordsmen coming to Japan (and other Asian cuntries) under the guise of English teachers to find scabbards for their katana!
warning, warning
Presonally, I would have warned the student of his possible intentions and informed her he is a 'player'
I had a similar situation
I had a similar situation with an attractive student I was teaching privately who got approached by an 'acqauintance', rather then a friend of mine. I got my wife to mention innocently in passing that the gent was anything but and it worked a treat.
Apologies for the typo.
Apologies for the typo.
Bedding students
He is a jerk. Good friends help solve problems, not create them shallow Hal syndrom. I like you own a language school. No question cut away the festering wound before it festers further. There is NO SHORTAGE of good teachers out there looking for a great place to work right now THINK NOVA>>>.. He is not your friend in this situation. Be smart. YOu went out of your way and met your moral obligations to give your so called friend a chance. See the reality of the situation and make the right call for yourself, the students and all future employees.
So, let me get this
So, let me get this straight. He has never actually worked at your school as a teacher, which means you haven't actually paid him a single yen, your student knows him only as a 'friend' who was invited to a party, he's an adult, she's an adult, and your pissed off because he is going out with her? Sounds to me like it's your problem, not his.
You were opposed to NOVA's non-fraternization policy when you were a teacher, and now you flip-flop when you are a manager? Strike 2 against you.
Talking about how his 'pecker shouldn't come before friendship' makes it sound like YOU had the hots for her! Worrying about how she 'puts food on your table' shows me that you really don't give a damn about her as a person, so cut the crap with worrying about how she'll end up with a broken heart. Strike 3, you're out!
This is not a betrayl issue, it's a question of you butting into his private life. Eikaiwa schools are not 'schools' in the regular sense; they don't offer degrees, they don't give diplomas, and teachers have no power or authority over their adult students. So any moral issue about teachers dating students is ridiculously misguided. In a REAL school, there would be an issue, because of abuse of authority and possibly coercing a student into a relationship because the teacher can impact the student's grades or even graduation. Those issues do not apply to eikaiwa schools, so there should be no issue about consenting adults meeting and dating.
If a 7/11 store clerk became friends with one of the regular customers who came into the store there would be no ethical dilemma, unless he was stalking her or harassing her for a date. But short of any inappropriate or illegal behavior, there wouldn't be any problem with it. Well, eikaiwa schools fall into the same category. In my opinion, you are way out of line on this one. If a teacher harasses students or something like that it's ok to make them stop. But when two consenting adults want to become friends (or more) it is YOU who is in the wrong telling them not to.
From a former NOVA manager...
I used to be a manager at NOVA and I strongly believed in the no-socialization policy. If you want to get a date go to a party, not somewhere where there is a teacher-student relationship, no matter how coporate the relationship may be.
However, you made the mistake of having a party and inviting non-employees. I think the previous poster put it very nicely:
"So, let me get this straight. He has never actually worked at your school as a teacher, which means you haven't actually paid him a single yen, your student knows him only as a 'friend' who was invited to a party, he's an adult, she's an adult, and your pissed off because he is going out with her? Sounds to me like it's your problem, not his.
"You were opposed to NOVA's non-fraternization policy when you were a teacher, and now you flip-flop when you are a manager? Strike 2 against you."
Wait, let me play that again....
"You were opposed to NOVA's non-fraternization policy when you were a teacher, and now you flip-flop when you are a manager? Strike 2 against you."
Oh, heck, what's one more time...
"You were opposed to NOVA's non-fraternization policy when you were a teacher, and now you flip-flop when you are a manager? Strike 2 against you."
HA!
Your friend is a cowardly pecker-head, no doubt about it, but as he was a non-employee you can't fault him for using your school as a place to satisfy his need for carnal knowledge. You should have been smarter. You let foxes in the hen house--of course they're gonna eat. Perhaps you should toss the English racket and become a professional pimp.
That said, your "friend" couldn't face you. His pecker must be as small as his courage. So, if it's any concellation, your former student may be disappointed when she sees your friend naked (I say "may" because Japanese men are usually small in their equipment and the fact that your friend is too may not surprise your former student after all). Ditch your "friend" as a friend. If you don't sever ties with him completely you might as well change your middle name to "WELCOME" and continue to be a doormat for him and his social life. If you're any kind of man, you don't need his cowardice in your life.
I absolutely love the pickle you are in now. I hope you continue to lose students from your socialization situations and end up having to invoke your own non-socialization policy, if your little business survives. It'd be so great for you to have to listen to yourself "sound like a NOVA manager".
Let me be the first (albiet former) NOVA manager to give you nice strong "We told you so!!!"
And, before I go, let's play it again, Sam:
"You were opposed to NOVA's non-fraternization policy when you were a teacher, and now you flip-flop when you are a manager? Strike 2 against you."
HAHAHAHAHAHA. I love irony.
Why not?
"I used to be a manager at NOVA and I strongly believed in the no-socialization policy. If you want to get a date go to a party, not somewhere where there is a teacher-student relationship, no matter how coporate the relationship may be."
I'm just curious on what grounds you oppose socialization between eikaiwa 'teachers' and students? Nova, ECC, GEOS, AEON... These corporations are categorized as business under Japanese commercial law, not 'schools.' The people doing the teaching are paid office staff, not 'teachers,' not according to any accreditation system recognized in Japan (some may have credentials, but that has nothing to do with their job or responsibilities at an eikaiwa).
There are legitimate ethical questions about teachers having romantic or sexual relations with students--at least there are when talking about REAL schools. First, obviously, if it's a high school (or below) we may be talking about criminal conduct. If it's a college or university age probably isn't the issue, but these schools offer degrees and qualifications which have real value in the world. The thought that a teacher might give you a bad grade or not pass you unless you have a relationship with them can be a very real form of coercion. Furthemore, if there is a relationship, then perhaps the teacher's evaluation of the student's work is not objective. Again, this can have a real impact on that student's future. THESE ARE THE REASONS WHY MOST SCHOOLS DO NOT ALLOW TEACHERS TO HAVE 'RELATIONSHIPS' WITH STUDENTS!!! None of these arguments apply to eikaiwa schools, so what is your beef with it?
Eikaiwa schools impose non-socialization policies simply because they want to control their employees even beyond working hours, and because they fear even socializing with students may impact their business. But this is ridiculous. Many students come to eikaiwas specifically for the purpose of meeting and socializing with foreigners, and eikaiwa schools USE THIS AS A SALES POINT! Furthermore, 'socializing' (including even romantic relationships) does not automatically equal 'behavior detrimental to our business.' Teachers who do things which grievously damage the eikaiwa's reputation--passing out drunk and sleeping the night in front of the school, harrassing students for dates--whatever it might be, then those teachers should be reprimanded or even fired. But simply 'socializing' does not come close to such kind of behavior.
Teachers are human, and, maybe even more importantly from the corporate perspective, they are tax paying residents of Japan. They are entitled to rights (human rights and the protection of the law while in Japan). Until dating itself is outlawed, then there should be no blanket prohibition of eikaiwa 'teachers' dating 'students.'
From another former manager
While I will keep my speculations of your popularity to myself... It doesnt help that half the old ads (the one with the student and instructor's hands almost touching) and most of the sales pitches encouraged the image of instructors being obtainable. The fact that staff are trained to give male students female teachers and vice versa. It also doesn't help that at the majority of schools I worked at (OK, all of them) at no time during the sales pitch are students informed or the no fratinazation policy. Most of the experienced instructors and managers are married to former students.
I can't say I liked the company, but I liked most of the people I worked with and the students I taught. Nova instructors get a lot of flack thrown at them.
So, let me be one of the most recent (I know I'm *not* the first) former NOVA manager to give you nice strong "fuck off"~
Its a lack of respect for
Its a lack of respect for you. You dont bite the hand that feeds yardy ya.. But its true. Unless hes really in love, then maybe id cut him some slack, but of all the chicks out there, does it have to be this one, no. Tell him to pull his head in..
And let's remember that the
And let's remember that the non-socialization was basically ruled illegal no matter what our personal opinions are. Personally, I believe that as adults we should have the right but I would never do it. And in fact, I waited until I resigned - to date someone.
