GaijinTax.Com: A Gaijin’s Guide To Reducing Tax In Japan
If you're in business for yourself or are teaching a lot of private lessons on the side, you've probably wondered about taxes, what deductions you can claim, and how to file a return. Emil at GaijinTax.Com wrote to me about his website that can help you reduce your tax in Japan. Here's his shameless plug for a site that looks useful:
Tax time is almost over - March 16th is the deadline this year (don’t worry, you can still submit late). Do you have any idea what the hell is going on? Apart from being told that you have to file your own taxes, you’re probably just as confused as I was several years ago. But now it’s time to make it all clear and simple, and hopefully get back a load of cash while we’re at it!
Some of you may have already heard of GaijinTax.Com. However for those of you who haven’t, did you know that if you have independent business income, such as from teaching private lessons at your home and cafes etc, then you can claim business expenses such as rent, phone, utilities, dinners, and even travel? You’ve probably heard people mention it, but actually going about it is a whole different story. This is where GaijinTax.Com comes in. This site was put together to help foreigners get the upper hand in the tax game.
The entire website is free, and walks you step by step, in English, through each box in the tax form. It tells you what expenses you can deduct, such as rent, computers, international travel, etc, and more importantly shows you where exactly you can enter it in your tax forms. Getting a ¥50,000 to ¥100,000 tax refund is always nice, and knowing that your residential tax and national health insurance will decrease by a similar amount gives you even more to smile about.

Damn! I wish I had found this before last Friday! I wouldn't have had to have waste 3 hours with an interpreter and could've saved so much more money! At least I know what to do next year! Domou.

Why pay those jap bastards any tax? Doing pizza lessons day in day out, is enough punishment. They should pay me, not the other way around.

I totally agree HUCK. Until such time as the Japanese Government and Japanese Employers recognise foreign workers' basic human rights, not to meniton foreign workers' rights as defined by Japanese labour law, then to HELL with paying Japanese TAX.

Huck and Jackie, I applaud you. It is about time someone just came out and said it. I worked in eikaiwa for years, and the darn right exploitation of foreigners is a micro-industry in itself, within eikaiwa. Why should foreigners, who are short changed, and given the short end of the stick, when it comes to the very basics of their human rights, and protection provided by Japanese Law, pay a god damn cent in tax ???? !!!!!!! Until the government steps in, and makes a genuine effort to stop the exploitative practices of those bastard eikaiwa factories, then they have no right at all to be collected taxes. Let them and their greedy money pinching fingers rot in hell, until they are prepared to give foreigners their proper rights. Peace. Jane.

I don't know. Maybe he really doesn't believe in paying taxes. But I wouldn't personally want to suffer the consequences of getting busted for it - fines, criminal record, deportation, etc. But good luck anyway.

Not true. Well, except for your first year here (when you had a job in America the previous year). After you stop receiving income in the States, you only have to file a tax return with all "0"s on the paper.
