Nova Losing Control

Now this is really bad news: some Nova schools have taken it upon themselves to close up shop due to the lack of teachers. As the article points out, Nova is losing control. Here's a translation of the report from the Sankei Shimbun.

NOVA continues to close schools due to instructor shortages.

METI’s order to suspend part of Nova’s business has forced the Nakamozu school in Osaka and schools elsewhere to take it upon themselves to close the schools and stop accepting reservations for lessons. It is believed that the schools acted on their own in an attempt to cope with students being unable to make reservations for lessons at the times they want due to the lack of teachers.

The schools that closed include Nakamozu, in Osaka, and the Ichigaya (closed on the 17th) and Suidobashi (closed on the 18th) schools in Tokyo.

A Nova spokesperson said that the schools were not told to close. The repeated delay of teachers’ pay and the Japanese staff ready to revolt underscores the steady decline in Nova’s ability to remain in control.

The Nakamozu school reportedly closed on October 16. A notice on the entrance to the school read: Notice of school closure and that the school would be closed from October 16 until the 31st. The notice also contained messages scribbled in English from teachers saying they would miss the students.

The Nakamozu school was scheduled to close its doors at the end of October and merge with the Tennoji school (also in Osaka). Nova is reported to have sent a notice on the 19th to the approximately 400 students at the school informing them of the merger.[Comment: This was pointed out in the forums as not making any sense. The 19th is likely a typo.]

After Nova informed its foreign teachers on October 12 that they would be paid on the 19th instead of the usual 15th, around 200 teachers a day continue to be absent from work. To cope with the sudden shortage of teachers, schools have reportedly been switching to ocha no ma ryuugaku lessons taught over a videophone, but some schools have been unable to fill the gap.

According to a representative for Nova schools in Osaka, “Reservations can’t be made for lessons this week. We apologize to the students for the schools closing on their own and are refusing reservations.”

Edit: Here's the Nakamozu school from the article in the Sankei Shimbun.

New fax just in. Govt wont pay

My AT just called and said they just got a fax from Monkeyboy stating that the Government is refusing to pay 80% of unpaid salaries if (when) NOVA goes belly up and that he is really really sorry about this.

What could this mean?
Either he is talking shit trying to get people to keep working (seems nuts removing the last bit of incentive anyone still working had) or its true

By then maybe Monkey

By then maybe Monkey Chopsticks will think the staff & teachers will have forgotten about being paid!..In the meantime I think those of you calling in sick or taking time off are doing the right thing..I know you must be feeling that you are letting your students down..but I have to agree with some other posts and blogs that state by going to work for free teachers are helping MC work off some of the debt he will have lumped on him as attempts to work it off from the prison laundry in the Osaka detention house. At the very least at present the company should be insuring that teachers have some travel money and/or meal money on their scheduled work days. Why should anyone have to dip into their own finances/credit card accounts or borrow money from friends and family when a company has broken the country's labor laws (again) by not paying its employees.

Found a supermarket that has

Found a supermarket that has cup noodle for 89 yen in the Osaka area if anyone is interested..lets see..11 days to pay day times 11 cup noodles ..?..= ?

So...

..this means that we've been working completely for FREE for the last month and a half.

A bit misleading, may I change some wording

You shouldchange the"...have been employed for:"

to read

"...have been enrolled in employment insurance for:"

I have helped many people get UB. Believe me, there is a lot of misinformation around, and there are little quirks that can affect you.

It can't be...

This can't be true. How could this legally happen to anyone who is working in the country legally?

Unless... all of us are employed under Nova illegally... Now that wouldn't surprise me a bit. Ugh. The hits just keep on comin'.

THIS IS NOT CONFIRMED YET

I just want everyone to know that I just spoke with LS at the MMC and the people in charge of actually putting out this information and they stated that it was NOT issued to the masses yet, but there was a VERY long fax regarding the current stature of the company and they are working to translate it immediately. Don't listen to this guy, the fax said NOTHING about rejecting Nova's unemployment wages. We'll have to wait for an official announcement when it comes later this evening. It's probably the normal "We're very sorry for making you wait, but funds will be transferred to bank accounts on Monday" or something similar.

October 31st you say...

When Sahashi and co..wrote up this latest fax I'm sure the date chosen was just the result of a dart being thrown at the calendar.
BTW..a couple of things I'd like to hear more about..does anyone know if every branch in Nara-ken is winding up tomorrow? Or is it just Nara City? Cheers..have a good weekend all..no matter how bad things are going for you don't forget you're in Japan..get out and have a good time!

yeah I hope so but

When he called sounded pretty shocked and his voice was breaking so i hope it is a bad hoax, but deep down Im not surprised though, didnt think they would just pay all those gaijin government money

Unpaid wages

I said unaaid wages not unemplyment money

unpaid wages

******
the unpaid wages fund only counts for small or medium-sized firms. NOT big firms like nova (firms under 100 people or under 300,000,000 yen market capitalization) check-

http://www.letsjapan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=254781&postdays=0&postord...

it has the photo you can see of the leaflet in japanese

Are you sure?

The article doesn't say 100 people anywhere that I can see (only looked in the first paragraph). It has 100 written in pen above the first paragraph (second photo). Not exactly an official addition.

Sorry, I made a typo. I

Sorry, I made a typo. I meant unpaid wages. Unemployment wages doesn't make much sense.

I understand a lot of this

I understand a lot of this is poorly worded. I did not write this myself, I was just copying the form that Hello Work gave me word for word. I made some typos myself, but all in all it's just a typed up version of the papers I received from hello work. Hence, not my error, but just part of why this thing is so hard to understand... it's poorly worded from the start.

No-show..

No I heard Sahashi Toppatsued. Something about 'friends' in the Virgin Islands being ill.

Do you really expect people

Do you really expect people to work for free you moron? Just because your so thick that you will work for months with no pay, don't expect other people to, now F**k off and get a life!

Give up your PASSPORTS and get a TICKET home!

Phone the EMBASSY on Monday!

On Harrowe'en?

On Harrowe'en? Hahahahaha!

Will Sahashi dress up as the ghost of Usagi-chan? And hand the paycheques out of
Jack-O-Lanterns?

That stinks like butt pellets.

Anyone believe THIS news?

Harrowe'en, NO!

HOLLOW WEEK, I THINK!

To be-leave, or not to be-leave, that is the question!

I'm starting to BE-LEAVE!!!! SEE YOU, ALL!!!!

NO comparison!

Just stating a fact! A ripoff is; a ripoff!!!! "I've got my own PowerBook." They might be keeping tabs on you, with that rented out vesion!!!!!!

what to believe..what to believe

According to the leader of the General Union we can eventually get 80% of what we're owed (albeit in 4-6 months time from now).

But as with much of the semi-speculative info going around about Nova's collapse, contradictions are abundant.
Doesn't it seem a little late for us to start receiving news about how the 80% payment of unpaid wages will not happen? Why this sudden bit of new information all of a sudden? Surely one of us 5000 or so employees has already properly checked with some authoritative organization.

Also, the only reason I can think that Monkeybridge Saruhashi would want us to think that we can never collect unpaid wages is to stop us from quitting and have us keep hoping that the paychecks will come (and have us believe they won't come if we leave). But this argument is also a little flawed in that it assumes that we won't realize he'd still be breaking the law by not paying those that have left.

Such bitterness is a shame

I'm sorry that you are so bitter. It's a shame that english teachers cannot get along, if your bitterness were better directed we foreigeners in japan would have a better chance of uniting. For so long we have been at each others throats protecting 'our' company. I hope out of all this mess it will change.

Hmmmm

While it totally sucks that 90% of the Nova teachers and japanese staff have to deal with the present situation ...

I am laughing my ass off that the other 10% (primarily TI's, BT's, AAM's and RAAM's) will all soon be out of jobs. That's what you get for rubbing your noses in Saru's ass you bunch of fuckwits. I am also taking extreme joy in the knowledge that MICHAEL CARR (RAAM Yokohama), the biggest jerk of them all, will soon have no throne to sit in any longer.

Wait, did I say soon ...? No, correct that, since the monkeys flown the tree with no banannas I guess his throne is already gone.

Still a ripoff!

Don't forget; the Japanese rip each other off all the time! That's how the japanese economy works! How long have you been here? The point is; "Gaijinz" are being used in this case, as the go between/the bait, that's all ! ! ! Luv ya, all ! ! ! ! !

Crap is still "CRAP!"

The point is; we (GAIJINZ) are being used! Working for peanuts! While the Ring-Master is off to The Virgin Islands, having champagne for breakfast with his offshore bankers on his yacht and surrounded by beautiful girls in G-string bikinis!

Absolutely! Instructors

Absolutely! Instructors should be working for weeks at a time with no pay, and they should LIKE it! Hey traitors, here's a tip! If you actually HAD any loyalty to the company, you might know that major retailers like Jusco and Daiei now accept loyalty in lieu of cash.

Hello Work and unemploymeny payments

Hey guys
Just to clarify. If Nova continues to struggle on, even with the closure of many schools, they don't HAVE to file for bankruptcy, (and judging by monkeybridge's past deceits, I'd say he'd take this path just to piss everyone off!) this being the case you can only get the unemployment payment
1. If you are fired
2. If you quit AFTER 2 months of non-payment of your wages.
This date is calculated 2 calandar months after PAY DAY so our pay is now only 5 days late, that means we have to wait until DECEMBER 15th being unpaid by Nova, to quit and have it be a legitiment reason to qualify us for the unemployment payment.
I went to Hello work last month and had a very reliable translater from the internaitonal centre asking my very specific questions and getting me very accurate info.
Just a point to add, on the 25th (or is their payday the 26th?) the Japanese staff will all qualify for the unemployment allowance if they quit. Maybe some of the J-staff aren't aware of this (and probably wont believe a gaijin anyway) but you could pass the info on to them and tell them to look into it. J-Staff leaving would certainly speed up this shut down process!!!

DOUBLE UP! AND PAY!!!

THE "LIONS MANSIONS" THAT YOU LIVE IN AND PROBABLY OTHERS ARE OWNED BY "MONKEY BOY" TOO! ! ! FOR TWENTY ODD YEARS (BY THE WAY, THE AVERAGE HOUSIND LOAN IS 25 YEARS, COME TO THINK OF IT, HOW COINCIDENTAL!, HE'S PAID UP AND I BET YOU, IT'S IN HIS WIFE OR SOME OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS NAME.) "YOU TEACHERS" HAVE BOUGHT MANY MANY MANY APARTMENTS FOR HIM ! ! ! THIS IS HOW IT WORKS ! ! ! HOUSING IS "PROVIDED" BY THE COMPANY AS PART OF THE INCENTIVE TO COME TO JAPAN ! ! ! NO HASSLE ! ! ! (HERE'S THE CATCH!) BUT IT'S NOT "FREE" ! ! ! YOU LIVE IN A GROUP IN THESE PLACES ! ! ! YOU CAN FIND YOUR OWN, BUT THE RULE OF THUMB FOR RENT IS; ONE THIRD OF PAY (HOW MANY TEACHERS DO YOU KNOW RENT ON THEIR OWN?) BUT IN REALITY IT COST A BIT MORE IN JAPAN ! ! ! SO... HE CHARGES YOU GUYS, LET'S SAY; DEDUCT ¥60,000 FROM YOUR PAY!, A SCREAMING DEAL ! ! ! TIMES THAT BY 2, 3 OR 4 TEACHERS IN ONE PLACE ! ! ! "YES!" YOU'VE BOUGHT HIM "THOUSANDS" OF REAL ESTATE PROPERTIES IN JAPAN AND AROUND THE WORLD ! ! ! THERE PROBABLY WAS EXCESS ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥$$$$$$$$$$ TO COVER FOR THE EMPTY ONES ! ! ! THE FOUNDER OF McDONALDS WHEN ASKED WHAT HE DOES, SAID, " I DON'T SELL HAMBURGERS, I'M IN THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS!" (THEY ARE ALSO THE WORLD'S BIGGEST DISTRUBUTORS OF TOYS, TOO ! ! !)

Nova, toppatsus, and Mr. Potty-mouth

Re: "Toppatsus don't help anyone but the instructor..."
Dear sir:
You only let yourself down when you use language like that. Perhaps if you were more confident in your position, you wouldn't need the profanity.
