Despite a promise to pay teachers on the 19th, Sahashi could not deliver. So what does he do? Issue another meaningless fax.

The fax is new but not new. In fact, if you compare it to his previous faxes, it looks like he merged them all together and added in a few new bits here and there. He is still saying, be patient, I'm trying to get some money, good luck.

Mod in the forums gives us a rough translation:

Now, everyone is exhausted because of what has happened with our company. I'm really sorry for what has happened and i understand what has happened. Thank you for you efforts.

Every February to April is a really busy season because many new students join Nova. We can save a a lot of money during this time. Especially March is our biggest sales month. In this month we can get 1/3 of our yearly sales.

This year the we could not reach this target. (our cash flow wasn't this high).

In June this year, we could regain a little through profit, BUT, at the same time the government sanctions have hampered us.

Feb/16 and June/13 was a severe problem so nova has many problems right now. It's all my responsibility.

Once again, its my responsibility, and i really feel sorry for this situation, for i did my best for all my employees and teachers and the many hundreds of thousands of students in Japan.

I want to make everything OK so that everyone can continue to work with no worries.

I really want to support the staff that continue to work for the students despite the adverse conditions. To this purpose, I will spend all my energy to this and to the refunds of students.

I know this will take along time until i finish continuing the refunds to those students that have quit, but i am sure that i can do this.

I apologize to the workers who continue to work because i could not pay you salary on time. I really regret that i could not do this.

There are many ways to gather money, such as increasing capital or procuring capital but either way, we need more time, and we are doing our best at the moment. Anyway, until the end of this month we must secure capitol to make our siltation normal as before.

Now, we are at the telling point. I know this is our most difficult time to endure and I've asked many many times, but please hang in there a little longer. Please gambatte a little longer!

Update: An English version of the fax has been posted. It's sad to hear Nova lost it's "cash flow mountain."

When the media reports that Sahashi is in "hiding," he really must be cut off from the real world. Nova is in free fall and all he can do is recycle old faxes? The fax is obscene and an insult to the teachers.

There is one bit of telling information in the fax, however. The fifth paragraph, where is talks about "216" and "613," reads in part: ２１６、６１３という予測不能な緊急状態を迎えた以来... In other words, "Ever since the the unforeseen emergencies of February 16 and and June 13..."

What arrogance. The February raid on Nova and METI's punishment in June were foreseen? The man has no shame.

Another update: There's also this fax, too. Now the target is the 25th. Target?! Not even Sahashi himself knows when teachers will be paid.

If they can afford to pay

If they can afford to pay wages and travel in advance for teachers to go to work, then they should be using that money to pay some of us, OR the japanese staff, OR the students, OR the landlords what they are owed. The fact they are even thinking of using it as a carrot to get people to come to work is disgusting....exactly what I'd expect from Nova.

I`d just like to throw my two yen to the fire. I`m currently working for Nova and am in the same position as everyone else in this. We all have a right to be angry over these turn of events. The company is about to go belly up and alot of people will be up poo creek without a paddle, and I sympathise with those who are probably worse off than me, but the way you deal with this is a measure of your character. Go to work, call in sick, the choice is your`s and I agree you are well in your rights to not go. But to the people who choose to go to work yet make a joke of themselves by wearing casual clothes, wigs, paper ties and the like...I just don`t get it. This is what`s been going on in some branches in Japan that are devoid of any authority - AAM has resigned, no branch manager and all part time staff. People! What happenned to your sense of self respect? I mean the situation we are in is embarrassing but is there any need to stoop lower and drive home that stereotype of the shameless gaijin.

I don`t know about you, but in my time in Japan I`ve made an effort to paint a good picture of foriegners, especially to those who have had little contact with us in rural areas, but I seem to be fighting a losing battle because of those who don`t take themselves seriously and act like clowns. This is Japan for Christ sakes! And the the attitudes that many have in this situation are not the norm in this country. Give a thought to what people expect of others here and try to live up to those expectations even if they do seem impossible. It`s a highly regarded trait over here. Look, all I`m saying is if you do decide to go in to work, try to go in with some level of decency and self respect for your self, and for you students. You are representing your native countries after all. Hopefully everyone finds their own way out this. Good luck to you.

not a myth

I once lived in Nova accomodation and my roomies and I got friendly with Japanese tenents from four other apartments in the same complex. We talked about the rent with them one night and all of them were paying rent for their places at the same cost of one of us in the Nova pad. So even considering the possibility that one of us was paying the cost of the rental, and by some mad twist one more teacher's entire rent went to cover the utilities, that still meant Nova was pulling in 40 000 a month from the 3rd roommate. And that was just one of the old run down units that looked like a disposable set from "Welcome Back Kotter".

As for the apartments being empty for long stretches, that could only be a recent situation during the hiring freeze they started over a year ago. (I know they hired a ton of teachers recently but that's only in the last couple months.) When I was in Nova accom. if a room emptied, it was filled within 2 weeks, max. This was in Saitama, not Tokyo. I think they were making a shitload from rent. And think how much they were making when they still deducted rent but didn't give it to the landlords! Talk about recycling. Take rent from teachers to pay teachers salaries. Amazing.
