GEOS Australia Schools Permanently Closed
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) says it will protect the 2,300 students affected by the possible closure of a number of English language schools across Australia.

"If a decision is made by the administrators for the college to close, all overseas students will be protected by the tuition insurance scheme," she [Lynn Glover, director of the VRQA]said.
"This will mean that students will be placed in suitable alternative courses, here in Melbourne, at no additional cost and the VRQA will be supporting that process."
The voluntary administrators of eight English language schools say that the schools will not reopen because of the financial situation.
Justin Walsh and Adam Nikitins of Ernst & Young say they are working with the federal department of education and state government departments to find arrangements for the 2300 international students.
The administrators were continuing to investigate the nine companies operating under the GEOS name and hope to provide a further update on Wednesday, Ernst & Young said in a statement on Monday.
"We've very quickly worked through the options to keep the schools open, but were unable to do so," Mr Walsh said.
"That included speaking with the Japanese parent."
The interesting bits, however, are this:
The authority discovered that directors of GEOS have been diverting revenue from its Melbourne business, to support the operations of its other companies both in Australia and overseas.

But it is believed the GEOS group owes creditors tens of millions of dollars and will struggle to operate without significant help.
Back in Japan, GEOS is trying to downplay the closures and act as if nothing has happened. GEOS schools in Australia in trouble? We don't know what's going on. They just use our name under license. Everything is fine in Japan.
This just doesn't pass the smell test. How is it that eight schools, all taking in new students and seemingly operating without a problem, suddenly close and end up in voluntary administration overnight?
How do you distance yourself from the Australia schools while taking their money? What will GEOS say if the administrators in Australia find what they think are unusual money transfers? GEOS Australia and GEOS Japan may be two separate legal entities, but they are connected by the GEOS brand--a brand that is quickly tarnishing.
What does it say about the company when they post a few measly lines on their website saying everything is OK and not to worry? More information would do much to squash rumours about the company's health and mollifying any complaints its customers may have.
But it's too late for that. The schools won't be re-opening. As a student or employee of GEOS, you can't help but wonder if this isn't Nova all over again.

The second domino (NZ) has fallen. Not as messy as Aus, but still - gone. GEOS is no more in NZ Why was Australia just cut off? But NZ sold? The probable answer is that Aussie had $10 million dollars in cash available - readily available. To sell it would be to put the $10 million back in, and even then, despite the protestations of Aussie staff it would be hard to sell for much more due to low profitability. Too hard - so just get out. NZ however had strict fee protection and so Mr K could not get his hand on the ...say $ 2-3 million trust money. Answer - sell out to get out of lease obligations. Perhaps get some money from some fool who thinks consumers will trust GEOS NZ. (So naive I can't believe it)
It is very very clear what is going on. GEOS is retrenching to Japan rapidly to save the empire. Further evidence is the arrogant remedy offering displaced students in Aussie lessons back in Japan. Only Japanese got a remedy = explanation: Only Japanese consumers matter. Inference: GEOS is pulling back to Japan quickly. Inference: GEOS will not stand behind North America, Europe etc. The dominos are falling. Call it in weeks now.
Prediction: Those countries with no effective trust account systems will be plundered. THose countries without effective trust account systems will be sold off. THe plan is clearly to retrench back to Japan where consumers are a bit daft. Internationally however, GEOS is dead, deceased, passed away, snuffed. The owners have made it clear that they have no regard for consumers. Only fools will continue to trust them. GEOS internationally is finished. What a bunch of cynical racist liars and crooks! Anyone buying the GEOS assets, assuming agents will stay with them deserves to lose the money that they will lose.

When you can prove the sale through companies office or copy of the agent letter you should post GEOS NZ as the second domino. Now it gets really interesting with North America.
What an interesting little place Oz is and its governments are. So much of the paperwork legislation surrounding language schools in Oz owe a genisis to a flurry of school failures and money issues in WA in the 90s. However the paperwork has never ever addressed a central issue - trust accounting. Just all too hard, I suppose.
I thought this would happen, retrenching back to Japan. It appears GEOS' operation in Turkey is finished too, according to the forum. I can see it continuing in Japan with more and more schools closing, retrenching inwards and inwards until all that'll be left of GEOS will be Kusunoki, holed up in his office with nowhere to go.
I haven't been following comments as closely as I'd like so I'm slow in piecing the puzzle together. I'll have to do some more reading and catch up!

The new manager of GEOS CT closed the school last week. He has taken all GEOS CT's furniture, students, etc (basically anything of value) and moved to a new building and is proudly operating under a new school name as the owner. Sounds a bit suspect to me!!!!

The best proof is to view the evidence with your own eyes, so walk past the building and you will see that the doors are permanently closed. If you too far away then try phoning them +27 21 4212860, the phone just rings because there is no one there to answer your call.
So the building is empty, the phones just ring but when you send an email to geosct then your message is returned. Why is the new manager still using the geosct email address if he is operating under another name. Dont you think this is very suspect?

Yes you are 100% right, if you close a company the legal way then you will disconnect the phones. However if you just move the contents of the school in the middle of the night and pop up in a new location OVERNIGHT under a different name, then you are running away and paying the telephone bill in order to disconnect it is not on your 'to do list'
Lets put it this way...which company with any good sense will leave their telephones ringing during business hours. Your telephone is your lifeline to the outside word and is one of the ways you make your sales, leaving it ringing serves no purpose. Well unless there is no one there to answer it of course!!!

Asian students caught in sex trade

THE immigration department is investigating brothels that employ young Asian women in breach of their student visas.
The women earn up to $10,000 a week as sex workers while brothel websites openly advertise "new fresh girls" arriving regularly from countries including South Korea, Thailand, China and Japan.
One Asian woman under investigation has not turned up to a single lesson at the English course she signed up to attend.
Instead she has been working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week at a group of four city brothels - one just a couple of minutes walk from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's Sydney offices in Elizabeth St. A fellow prostitute who wants to learn English has been attending courses in her place and using her name.
Holders of student visas are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week while their course is in session and unlimited hours during course breaks, but must attend their nominated course.
DIAC fraud officers were alerted to widespread abuse of student visas, with some of the sex workers paying corrupt immigration agents in their own country up to $8000 to arrange their "visas" under the foreign student program.
There is no suggestion these women are "sex slaves."
Many worked as prostitutes in their home countries and came to Australia freely to make more money to send to their families overseas - using dodgy cash brokers so they do not alert AUSTRAC, which must be notified of transactions of $10,000 or more.
There is a high turnover of women who are encouraged by the brothel owners to earn extra money by performing unsafe sex without condoms.
"One woman reported to me that she doesn't bother with regular health checks [for] HIV [and] hep B and C and she happily provides 'natural' sex services to clients that pay her well if she thinks they look 'clean' because she doesn't believe HIV is prevalent here in Australia," one man who knows several of the women said. The man, who asked not to be named, has also spoken to immigration department investigators.
"They don't have tax file numbers, they are paid cash in hand. It is totally immoral," he said. "The worst girls are making $2000 a week and the top girls earn $10,000."

"THE fall in international student commencements accelerated in July as numbers from India plummeted with the crackdown on student visa fraud and tougher migration policies.
The falls are hitting vocational and English language courses heavily but these also feed students into universities, which are braced for the effects as well.
The figures, compiled by Australian Education International, have been revealed as the international education sector lobbies government for support and for adjustments to be made to the visa rulings.
Year-to-date new student commencements across the whole international sector were down 7.4 per cent at the end of July compared with a year ago.
The English college sector was worst hit, with a fall of 23 per cent, while the vocational sector dropped 8.6 per cent.
Commencements in the higher education sector, however, were up 5.6 per cent........."
These figures are underpinning the difficulties in getting an ESL teaching possie in Australia right now.

Sure some Aussie managers knew about the "loans" and all that. But the real dirt bags are the GEOS NA managers, which you can count on one hand, who orchestrated the whole thing. This includes other scams at other affiliates around the world they initiated on behalf of Special K. They are the dirtiest of all, even if some GEOS Aussie managers took part in the charade/ scam. Maybe legal trouble in Australia might finally bring this to light. Can't imagine any ex-GEOS Australia managers being loyal to the little king anymore.

I agree with Mr X. It is interesting that the poster prior to that thinks that the schools in Canada are Eikaiwa. Actually eikaiwa are a uniquely Japanese phenomenon. The schools in Canada, whilst arguably not particularly good, are simply run of the mill language schools - a different beast entirely.

It is not just Uri on here trying to control his message; I am sure there are a few unwilling slaves that got a GEOS memo on how to properly respond to such "rubbish." You see, there really isn't anything better to do in the sad little world of GEOS then try in vain to control the message on here. You see, Shawn has rubbed someone raw with this Web site, and the GEOS types have tried many ways for a very long time to shut this site down and expose who is exposing their dirty little secrets. Let's just say, the people who exposed Uri and made a few well-timed emails to Jenny at Open Hearts awhile back did all the winning. Why else did Uri fail at Open Hearts if it was such a "done deal" as he was basting around the world? The deal feel through because of people on here (or Uri's own incompetence). If anyone is "winning" it is those people, not the little mutts that keep trying to cover up the negative Uri Carnat posts with more posts.
