The GEOS Fallout Begins

If you saw the GEOS press conference on TV this evening, one thing was very conspicuous by its absence: Kusunoki wasn't there. In his place was Kazumi Suhara giving the bad news.

According to the Jiji Press, Kusunoki didn't attend because he wasn't prepared to file for bankruptcy while some of his executives were. A GEOS lawyer at the press conference said that due to divisions within the company, bankruptcy proceedings went ahead without the consensus of the board.

Oh to have been a fly on the wall at GEOS for the past few months...

With GEOS gone, here comes the fallout. Stop me if you've heard this one before:

The fate of Geos teachers, meanwhile, is uncertain, even though G.communication says it will try to hire them.

Brian Gilliland, who works about five hours a day three to four days a week teaching corporate customers for Geos, said he hasn't received his pay for the first half of April and hasn't heard from Geos whether he will get his salary.

"Last night I got a call around 9:30 and I was told my class tomorrow will be canceled," Gilliland, who has no other source of income, said. "This month, my classes finished, and I was ready for new classes. They said there are a bunch of classes starting in April, but I only had one class in April.

"Basically you can't teach here anymore. Salary is going down and there is no work," he said, adding that he is looking for a nonteaching job as he speaks Japanese.

The Yomiuri Shimbun also got into the act noting how the end came swiftly without the knowledge of the teachers or students. The article notes that the lights at the GEOS Umeda school in Osaka were off, which came as a surprise to a 54 year-old housewife who was shocked to learn of the bankruptcy and closure of the school. The staff had told her that everything was alright. She had paid 130 thousand yen in lessons for the rest of the year.

The doors at the Namba school were also closed. An American who had worked at GEOS for the past year and a half found out about the bankruptcy when he showed up for work only to find the school closed.

A young woman who had been going to the Namba school for the past five years had just paid 250 thousand yen in lesson fees. She doesn't know if she can get a refund or she she'll be able to transfer to another school, but she does know that she wants GEOS to contact her and tell her what's going on.

At the JR Sannomiya Higashiguchi school in Kobe, the windows have been papered over so no one can see in. A teacher posts a sign saying that the school is closed Wednesday and Thursday. A Japanese staff member says she knows nothing and wants to cry.

Although G.communication is allowing students to transfer to Nova schools, the closure of so many GEOS schools is going to be a sore point with many students. Can demands for refunds and lawsuits be far behind?

I agree, Jack. G-Com is not buying GEOS Eikaiwa schools to lose money. It will do whatever it needs to do to make the acquisition a profitable one. There is nothing to preclude G-Com from closing more schools than GEOS had announced it would.

Bottom line is the bottom line and teachers will be sent packing.

Yeah senseiman1, I have to say that is a pretty fair assessment.

I think the system will need to change--and hopefully it will evolve into something better. I think a monthly contract would be much more enticing....but anyway.

As for those spirit sheets, I think those are pretty legit. There is always a big jump in money at the end for a reason. Most re-signs (existing students) come in toward the end of the month, seeing as though that is often a deadline for a discount. While new student sign-up money could come in at any time of the month.

I think the nay-sayers on here are a bunch of wind bags, but you seem alright.

I wonder if I know you...

Ah well, we were warned, at least the teachers here cannot say differently.

Anyway, I am in fact one of those teachers. I was/am looking for a job, but I didn't find one that paid more than GEOS so I didn't accept their offers. (If I could back time...)

To say that this wasn't planned... Please, they were going to tell us on Tuesday but something obviously went wrong so they gave us a 4 minute VCHAT with no info what so ever. And GEOS' pay month is from the 21st to the 20th... Good thing they made us work a whole entire month!

Now I really have no idea what will happen...
One thing is for sure:
1) Getting money for work from the 21st March to the 20th of April is not going to happen
2) Students will probably not show up for classes
3) the ones that do will bombard the staff with questions, but we know nothing. They won't believe this of course.
4) Not all of the (saved) schools will open on Friday
5) We will see lots of people quitting over the next few weeks: students, teachers...

Did any teacher actually get a call or email today?
From what I gathered online, employment conditions at G.Com are the rock bottom of Eikawa... And I thought it couldn't get any worse :D Does anyone confirm?
I'm also wondering about their whole 40,000Yen fine for missing a day, is that for real? I mean... Those of us who have holidays booked will get ripped off! Might as well not go to work for a whole week in that case, LOL.

Ah, one more thing... Can they just tell you on the next day that you were fired? Don't they owe us 30 days of notice in addition to the missing wages?

Ah, and being unemployed for one day with no notice sucks. The bad weather doesn't help either.

The weather has sucked today. Doesn't look like it'll get much better. Now, I was told by a former nova employee that you can recoup some of the money owed to you and, I understand, you are entitled to 30 days of severance, all at a rate of about 60%.

I am looking into flights back home, searching out jobs and getting paperwork in order. And cooking the food I had saved for when/if this would happen. It still tastes good.

Monthly contracts would probably be easier to sell but they would also present a less-stable source of income. They should really focus on bringing the cost-per-lesson down, which is difficult for a big company like AEON with a set way of doing things. It always struck me that in an industry with few barriers to entry like Eikaiwa the big schools with high fixed overhead costs like AEON aren't well positioned to compete in an economy like this. If any individual teacher with a bit of savings and some business sense can charge half the price for basically the same service - which they basically can - the AEONs of the world are going to be an endangered species.

Its possible that you know me, but its been 7 years since I worked at AEON!

I think that there is or would be demand for high quality ESL education. However, I don't believe that it will be supplied. So I agree with you that the big changes will not happen. I also agree with you that people's reasons for going to eikaiwa are not only about learning English.

However, I am not sure about your other comments on the Nova clientelle. Certainly when I worked there, I came across a few people who behaved strangely, but most were relatively normal when you bear in mind that the Nova universe was a strange environment to be in. I can see why a lot would have a stressed reaction to lessons in the Nova format, as well as have a negative attitude once they realised they had wasted their money. In addition you had a complaints system that encouraged unreasonableness. A lot of the bad behaviour was probably provoked by the environment, I think.

You need to bear in mind that the majority of students did not renew when the 3 years that they had signed up for had past and many left well before that. Also, the majority of students did not come back to new Nova after the crash. Of those that did, most did not stay on after their tickets had expired. So you only have a small hard core group who stuck with Nova through thick and thin.

senseiman1

7 years you say....I might not know you then.

But anyway, as for lesson cost, the group lessons are quite reasonable (around 2000yen a shot). Not too bad considering the location of most schools, and the other perks they offer. The round up lessons are a different story though.

I see the GEOs breakdown causing people to be afraid of big contracts...which might hurt things a little. But not enough to bring down the company, that is for sure.

I won't be working here for the rest of my life, but our jobs are all pretty stable.

Ah well, we were warned, at least the teachers here cannot say differently.

Anyway, I am in fact one of those teachers. I was/am looking for a job, but I didn't find one that paid more than GEOS so I didn't accept their offers. (If I could back time...)

Ah, and being unemployed for one day with no notice sucks. The bad weather doesn't help either.

I'm in the same boat. I knew it was coming but in the last few months I couldn't find any other jobs in my area that were paying as high as GEOS. I noticed the NOVA G-Comm positions that have been advertised in the past say they start teachers at 210000/month. I expect we'll be looking at the same thing 3 months down the road.

Yes, I am glad to hear that AEON jobs are safe for now. I actually liked working there, loads of memories.

2,000 yen isn't too bad for a com lesson, but AEON really needs the higher income from the Round Up and Private lessons to get by. When I worked there the Round Up lessons were about 4,500 yen each and privates were something like 8,000 each, which is probably more than most people are willing to pay these days. If memory serves I think my schedule at AEON was about 45% Round Up, 45% Com lessons and 10% Privates, with the income from each lesson roughly similar due to the difference in students per class.

This was one of the points I remember our manager trying to drive home all the time - that we needed to steer students away from com lessons and into Round UP in order to make our "spirits" (god what a stupid name for it) each month.

BTW out of curiousity is AEON still hiring overseas or only in Japan now? Think I read something here that they had stopped overseas hiring or something after NOVA went bust.

G.Com is taking over GEOS as it did for NOVA. As someone who was around for the NOVA fiasco with info from the Ministries and NOVA staff and now again with the Ministries and GEOS staff, people working in the English education industry in Japan should be expecting the same things and far worse.

For those of you who were here a few years ago you remember exactly what happened. NOVA went under and the market got flooded with people hungry for jobs. Tons of crap companies sprouted up, claiming to be operating for years, doing their best to snap up students and teachers at rock bottom prices and move beyond eikaiwas, going into ALT work and corporate education contracts. For people like us, no matter what our qualifications, our average salary went down, our time off went down, every benefit we had started disappearing. I remember going to group interviews for a job that paid 230,000 a month, 20 of us in the group, 4th group that day, 6th day that week, all for the same job.

Well, GEOS has gone under right after the fiscal year so all those poor bastards will have to face worse than that. Everything I see is part time only, 10,000 a day or 1500 an hour, transportation if your lucky. And for those of you that stick around for the pre-summer hiring (for everyone that leaves Japan during the summer) you guys will probably be better off going back to your home countries and working at McDonalds. You'll be lucky to get full time at 180,000 or 200,000. The world economies are screwed. Japan isn't any better. And they won't be giving a damn about any of you people unless you got a masters degree, teachers degree, and other crap -- which if you have, you would be better off teaching in your home countries and not at dead-end eikaiwas.

The gravy train is over.

well put.

Can anyone confirm? Kusanoki is refusing to sign the bankruptcy agreement? What?

Congratulations! I know you've put in a lot of work bad-mouthing GEOS over the years, and it must be immensely satisfying to finally see them fail.

I think you've every right to be bragging about this one for years to come, and we all look forward to reading about it on your blog.

So you're saying that Shawn brought down GEOS by bad-mouthing them on his blog?? I didn't see so many negative posts about the company on here until September/October, when it was reported that salaries had been paid late. Do you honestly think that's led to the collapse of GEOS? From what I can see, they were already preparing to file for bankruptcy back then. I don't think Shawn had anything to do with it. If anything, it was a combination of bad market conditions and GEOS' inability to balance the books.

GEOS is bankrupt - get over it and move on.

So now you are not only the quintessential teacher but also a magnanimous psychiatrist for the downtrodden. lonely and disturbed?

To answer your question:

Nowhere in my post did I extoll my own virtues as a teacher. I merely commented on what I thought to be one of the root causes for the current state of English language learning in Japan. No where did I say "Based on my experience as a teacher, I would do this... I would do that. As for the magnanimous pyschiatrist, I have never operated in that capacity at an eikaiwa, although one could argue that it is precisely that which a lot of eikaiwa students need, and not English instruction.

Really, if you've got nothing substantial to add other than poorly constructed digs, why bother?

Before former NOVA closed, there were about 800 schools. Now there are 200. G-com had promised to keep all the schools alilve, though. Also G-com kicked out lots of teachers.

This will happen to Geos as well. Many more schools will be closed than promised. Stop clinging to Geos.
I don't know how much longer Aeon and ECC will survive.

Actually, there are now more than 400 NOVA branches open, either directly owned by G.communication or franchise schools. Otherwise, I agree. They said they would keep the GEOS schools open and offer GEOS employees jobs "in principle," which pretty much means they'll be closing schools down when they decide it's expedient to do so, and staff and teachers will be given a choice of transferring to other areas or getting laid off.

Apparently we've started getting phone calls. I'm glad for those teachers who were waiting. If nothing else this is a "safety" net until a new job can be found.
At least in Kansai, we're spreading out in our job searches. Not everyone is falling back on being a teacher. I am...I got SUPREMELY lucky and landed an ALT job today. I will go into Umeda tomorrow to say my goodbyes...and grab my shoes.

On the subject of HelloWork and other places...they were floored when I went in. They knew of the situation, since they watched the news, but I was the first teacher to make their presence known. The HelloWork staff hadn't known it was so sudden for us teachers. They had nothing they could offer me, unlike during the NOVA crisis. GEOS is ultimately much smaller so there's not as many teachers to support. We can file for the unemployment insurance but we still likely won't see it for a few months to come.

Just off the top of my head (and it's been 5 years since I worked there, so no way I can remember all the incidents) at my branch alone, there was:
- a female student who hurled herself down a flight of stairs screaming "I want to die" in Japanese.
- a male university student who one evening yelled out his love for a male instructor and proceeded to run down the stairs bellowing "I'M GAY!"
- a middle-aged female student who climbed under the table in her classroom when she saw a bald-headed instructor from another class walking by.
- a middle-aged male student telling a junior highschool girl in my classroom how pretty she was and if she had any boyfriends.
- a young male student who had odd physical tics and strange expressions one night blurting out in front of a full Voice room how the female teacher had "big t*ts".

Incidents like these were almost daily occurrences; I doubt very much this behavior was provoked by the thought of wasted money on lessons or the stress of the Nova lesson format. As one of the posters implied, I'm no psychiatrist, but I don't have to be to recognize wierd or inappropriate behavior, and while you may be right, I'm betting someone demonstrating suicidal or homosexual behavior probably had it long before they ever opened a copy of Diplomat.

The cons for staying here anymore are quickly surpassing the pros. Perhaps living on the edge of poverty here is safer and healthier than it is in the US, but if your home country is any other developed country, Japan is likely a step down (unless you're fluent in Japanese and have skills that are in demand here). The poverty rate continues to grow, putting it near the top among developed countries just below the US (2) and Mexico (1).

The fact it's safe and people go out of their way to look nice in public masks the reality (as well as homeless people hiding themselves instead of begging for money at train stations). These 2 things actually are reasons I don't want to leave, but I'm not sure I'll be happy with myself in the long run if I stayed here mainly because there are pretty women everywhere (who aren't comparably that outgoing/sexual as a whole, hardly any can speak English, so it hardly matters anyway...same effect as looking at a fashion mag).

I actually teach at a private high school. Pay is slightly better, but it's nothing to be hopeful about if you're still doing eikaiwa or public school ALT. Same 1 yr contracts, sketchiness between companies and schools, still treated as an outsider despite being the main teacher of a class, little/no room for advancement.

@22:36

Well, I could tell you a few stories as well. Not only about students like the ones you mention, but teachers too. An AT who made a point of doing nearly all demo lessons himself, so that he could recommend his friends school to them instead for a commision. Staff helping students from Panasonic to get higher scores on the TOEIC by telling them the answers in advance for a fee, so that they could show the Nova certificate to their boss and have it count at their company. Teachers going to the bank on their no shows and getting the other teachers to call them on their cell phone if the student showed. Male teachers sticking their hands up women students dresses in the classroom. Trainers who later moved up to head office sitting and watching as teachers and students smoked dope in a Karaoke bar at a sayonara party. Mate, I saw it all.

I would still contend that these abnormalities were largely the product of the weird environment that people were working in and that given a different set of circumstances those people would not dream of behaving in that way at work. Having said that, there were a few people at Nova with genuine disturbances: both teachers and students.

Male teachers sticking their hands up women students dresses in the classroom.

Bullshit.

Is your contention is that the bizarre behavior of people involved with Nova (be it customers or staff) was a direct result of the Nova system, and had nothing to do with any other issues they may have been carrying before they walked through the doors?

If you want to argue that the environment at Nova enabled or emboldened people who already had problems to begin with to act out further, you might have a case there. Staff were notorious in tolerating any freakish behavior as long as the customers kept coming back. However, if your assertion that the environment at Nova was so extreme that it prompted people into engaging in strange behavior in the first place is frankly unbelievable. Tolerating strange behavior in the name of making a buck is far different than causing people to do it in the first place.

This was a conversation school in Japan, not a bunker somewhere in Iraq. And I wasn't talking about teachers; your point goes without saying and is largely tangental to the issue I'm pointing out. (And before going on any more about the teachers, do remember this: it was Nova's responsibility to properly screen prospective employees.) I was talking about customers; we had a local medical university with it's pyschiatric facility a few blocks away and it was common knowledge (verifed by staff and students who were at said college) that the staff routinely advised patients with psychological problems to take English lessons.

All of this behavior, be it on part of customer or instructor, could be avoided if some sort of standards were in place, as advocated by one of the earlier posters. My point was as long as eikaiwa tolerate the sort of behavior we witnessed at Nova in order to satisfy the bottom line, things will not change. It's hard to foster a proper environment for language learning when customers don't bother to demand it and eikaiwas don't bother to provide it.

I don't think there can be any disputing that.

12:35 and 12:50 One in the same. Looks like our Cuban dictator, red-book-carrying lover is back. Preach to the world dear GEOS Manager/ Napolean/ Stalin about how this board and all those "incompetent teachers" ruined your little GEOS manager fiefdom. You are a loser of the highest degree.

The Stalinist Kusunoki and all his little secret police henchman, ummm, "managers", failed miserably. Maybe you can get a job in Iran? I heard they like your GEOS manager/ HO skills and experience. Fit perfectly.

BTW out of curiousity is AEON still hiring overseas or only in Japan now? Think I read something here that they had stopped overseas hiring or something after NOVA went bust.

Hello, Thatotherperson. I saw your exchange with senseiman at 19:48. There is, in fact, an AEON recruiting office in the US. I have noticed that it posts job notices from time to time here in the US.

I think the whole culture shock of being away from home, in a very different culture like Japan, and working in a weird environment like NOVA did make more than a few people act differently than they would normally, or in the worst cases, cast off all their social conventions and behavioural norms from back home and lose the plot completely.

You're working in a place where you're held in majorly high "esteem" for being a foreign "teacher", get gawped at like a zoo animal by a crowd of "curious" Japanese, and pick up a gaggle of Japanese girls falling over each other to get into your pants - add copious amounts of booze into the mix as well, and I think it's understandable how people could go bonkers at a place like NOVA.

Can anyone confirm? Kusanoki is refusing to sign the bankruptcy agreement? What?

Midnight talker, I have not heard that Kusunoki refused to sign per se, but, rather, that he was opposed to signing off on it. And, thus, his absence at the press conference the day the bankruptcy was announced to the world can be explained.

00:45 Ha, ha! Yeah, I saw that guy on earlier...Obvious manager stooge, but just ignore him. He is just mad his master plan the with the great evil one (a.k.a. Special K) has dissolved. There is no future for a half-baked manager from the GEOS "system" anywhere else than McDonald's.

This board has exposed a lot and that is. I have known a few GEOS managers that operate like Napoleans, trying to control every last detail of their image. While there have been a few good managers here and there, they usually left a long time ago for more competent organizations. The ones that were left were usually Yes men and women and poor photocopies of Special K. They are just sad their perfect little world has collapsed from within...

I think the whole culture shock of being away from home, in a very different culture like Japan, and working in a weird environment like NOVA did make more than a few people act differently than they would normally, or in the worst cases, cast off all their social conventions and behavioural norms from back home and lose the plot completely.

Again, you're arguing apples and oranges; while I don't disagree with your points, it's another argument completely. You've been largely talking about teachers, and while your points are valid, it's not the teachers I've been talking about-it's the customers. As I've said before, Nova tolerated abberrant behavior on part of it's customer base as long as they kept showing up and buying more points. And it's a model that has been copied by more than a few eikaiwas, big and small. And unfortunately the damage has been done; Nova has been around long enough that it has essentially altered the perception in Japan of what it is to learn English. It's going to take a long time before that attitude changes, and places like GABA continue to foster it.

Any word on GEOS North American schools. There are a lot of schools here and yet no word. It will be very interesting to see if GCom shuts them down and how fast. Will affect a lot of people who study in NA and then go back to Japan and buy more lessons. Shaft them in NA and I cannot see them returning to the fold.

'If you want to argue that the environment at Nova enabled or emboldened people who already had problems to begin with to act out further, you might have a case there. Actually, I would equate working at Nova as being akin to working in a bunker in Iraq. Boy was I glad when I got out of there.

With regards to the prompting of people who already had issues to act on them, I would say that most people have issues, particularly young people, and given the right circumstances they will be prompted to act on them.

I agree that the staff did tolerate people with real mental problems in the way that you say. However, I would not claim as you originally did that these people were representative of the Nova clientelle as a whole.
The fact that there was a facility near your school that recommended English lessons to such people probably meant that you saw more than your fair share of the genuinely ill and that has colored your view of the clientelle of Nova as a whole.

Your final point about the responsibility of companies to provide an appropriate environment is indeed unarguable and I would agree with it.

By the way, I forgot to mention the two 'teachers' who had a running competition to see who could teach the same lesson the most times in a given month. Said teachers were ecstatic when the zone system was introduced because they could push to record levels of teaching the same lesson.

I'm just talking about what I saw at work. God knows what happened outside work, because I'm a family man myself.

Let's face it. We are all in society's boat. What happens in the larger world is likely to occur also in EikaiwaLand. Of course, there is something that can be done about that, but that is another topic. Teachers are not somehow exempt from the behaviors and foibles of mankind. See the following link. please.

http://www.japundit.com/GaijininJapan/Eikaiwa_Teacher_in_Japan_Arrested_...

With regards to the prompting of people who already had issues to act on them, I would say that most people have issues, particularly young people, and given the right circumstances they will be prompted to act on them.

If you are alluding to the teachers at Nova, I don't know how many times I have to concede to you on that point, and I also don't know how many times I have to say it's not the general thrust of what I am saying.

The fact that there was a facility near your school that recommended English lessons to such people probably meant that you saw more than your fair share of the genuinely ill and that has colored your view of the clientelle of Nova as a whole.

That may very well have been the case, but there was nothing stopping the local branch (or head office) from making a command decision and saying that anyone who poses a physical threat to themselves or others or engages in harassing behavior towards staff and other customers should be banned from the premises, have their points revoked and their money refunded. That would have been the responsible thing to do. That would have been the practical thing to do. And in the end, it may well have been the smartest thing to do, because by elminating such distractions it would have improved the atmosphere at the branch I was working and may have prompted an increase in enrolment.

But Nova never did that; they never stepped in and put and end to it, never banned anyone (that I was aware of) from the premises. Oh, teachers were fired for whatever reason, or transferred. But I never once heard of a customer who was banned from my branch because their conduct was impacting other customers' learning. But as I have said, for that to happen it would have to involve a customer base with courage base and a company that cared. Neither were in evidence.

Sadly, Nova was not the only eikaiwa like this.

Oh, give it up with the paranoia. You see a GEOS manager at every corner, at every point in the blog that you do not agree with. Your act is getting old. GEOS is gone. Ding dong the wicked witch is gone. We are past talking about the fall of GEOS now. As Shawn says, it is now about the fallout.

Teachers at Amity received an email today from the company explaining why Amity and AEON should be safe despite the recent fall of GEOS. I have to say, I honestly believe Amity is fine. We definitely go out of our way to please the current students and focus on maintaining our current student population and giving quality lessons.
At least at Amity parents pay for their children's English lessons usually because they look at it as supporting their child's education and preparing them for their future.

As for the regular AEON branches though...I have no idea.

This whole GEOS fiasco does not have to be a bad thing. In some ways, it is an opportunity for schools like AEON. I do not just mean simply picking up the orphaned "ronin" from GEOS. It is a lesson for all eikaiwa schools. Do not follow the path of Nova and GEOS. Do provide a proper environment for learning. Do screen both students and teachers.

I have managed an educational facility in the US (no, not eikaiwa). The owner gave me the green light on refusing to enroll students if I felt they (or their parents) would prove to be a chronic pain in the butt. I also hired all the teachers. I am pleased to say the group of teachers that I had were outstanding teachers and great people.

It can be done.

1:35 Dude, you are a bitter old manager, aren't you? Ha, ha! Actually, I love watching you and the others go at it. But this time I felt like chiming in.

Actually you seem to be the only one bitching about GEOS teachers/ ex-teacher/ others on here. Either you are up late and drunk, or you are a manager in North American given the time difference in your posts. So what is going on in North America? Things as smooth as you said they were? Any letters to pen about how perfect the world is at GEOS...?

Wow, you are easily suckered into responding, aren't you? I guess that is what happens when you lose power elsewhere. If you haven't noticed, this board is the only breathing room available to those who were screwed by GEOS and its managers. Deal with it. Otherwise you will be writing a lot on here...Maybe your time is better spent looking for a new job. I finished my search; have you started yours?

As I've said before, Nova tolerated abberrant behavior on part of it's customer base as long as they kept showing up and buying more points. And it's a model that has been copied by more than a few eikaiwas, big and small. And unfortunately the damage has been done; Nova has been around long enough that it has essentially altered the perception in Japan of what it is to learn English. It's going to take a long time before that attitude changes, and places like GABA continue to foster it.

I agree with you there. In fact, NOVA led the way in literally doing anything (even, as we all know, going beyond the law) to sucker anyone in to pay exorbitant amounts for lessons, Ginganets etc. Everyone was fair game and got exploited as much as possible.

As for oddball students, there were several certified mental patients at the branch I worked at, who I believe were recommended by their doctor to take NOVA classes as therapy. I was reliably told that NOVA actually sold itself to mental hospitals as a therapy for mental patients. Of course, they never told the instructors that.

I experienced several instances of disturbing behaviour in class from these types of students. They should not have been left with a NOVA instructor looking after them, they should have had trained professionals doing that who were experienced at working with mental patients. As you said, NOVA did anything to get, and keep, these types of students.

Aeon has huge debts and staffing problems. They will fall this year. Inside information.

Besides the obvious signs like no more full time hires, staff quitting and not being replaced, moving to smaller premises, desperate discounting, declining student numbers, horrible enrollment numbers for April peak season.....

Geos was Nova 2. Aeon staff should start looking for new jobs immediately, lest you be caught up in Nova 3. By all means... stay playing the gaijin clown dipshit rolling around on the floor in your expensive suit with a bunch of rat faced spoiled snotty nosed 4 year olds, but upon your head be it.

1:54 Exactly. Smart manager = smart teacher hires. Smart manager and school = smart system that is enforced and polished over time.

Too bad GEOS lacked a proper, ethical business plan enacted by intelligent managers.

I was gonna leave this one alone, but it's proven to be too tempting...
Let's review some of your claims:

CLAIM: Aeon has approximately 4 years' of funds saved for financial hardships.
FACT: No evidence provided (company financial statements, links to websites independent of Aeon where this can be confirmed, etc)

CLAIM: Company runs at a profit every year.
FACT: Same evidence issues as previous statement.

CLAIM: Aeon provides ECE (Early Childhood Education) certification.
FACT: To teach ECE up to the level required in order to be professionally certified, one would need to have a PhD in Education. There is no mention of any PhD requirements on Aeon's recruitment page, nor is there any mention of such training in any review of the company. Perhaps you meant ECE Certification in Japanese, but there is nothing that indicates such training goes on at their facilities in English or Japanese.

CLAIM: Aeon is reducing it's teaching staff.
FACT: Staff reduction can be an indicator that a company is in financial trouble. And why would Aeon have to downsize it's teaching staff if they are "running in the black year after year" as was claimed earlier in the same post?

CLAIM: Having professionals that need English taking lessons at Aeon is an indicator of financial health at Aeon.
FACT: NOVA had a lot of professionals that needed English on it's books as well. That didn't save it from piss-poor management and fiscal mismanagement.

CLAIM: There is nothing to worry about right now.
FACT: But there may very well be something to worry about in the near future. Because:

FACT: 2 of the Big 4 eikaiwa in Japan have gone bankrupt in the past two and a half years. If I was working at Aeon, I'd be dusting off the resume and looking at the want ads.

Thanks. I cannot take all the credit. When you manage a vocational college or tutoring facility here in the US, you are usually under the watchful eye not only of the owners but also an accreditation agency (itself monitored by the US government). In the beginning, the school must pass high standards in curriculum design, management and teaching in order to get its ACCET or ACCSCT accreditation. Then, with accreditation, the school is required to maintain certain operating standards. Moreover, there are periodic, if infrequent, visits by representatives of the accreditation agency. They have the right to check your accounting records, curricula, interview students and teachers, etc.

Can it be done in Japan? Maybe. But I am not so sure it will happen in our lifetime.

Teachers at Amity received an email today from the company explaining why Amity and AEON should be safe despite the recent fall of GEOS.

I'll bet the crew at GEOS recieved similar letters after the collapse of NOVA as well. Interesting choice of words by you though: Amity and Aeon should be safe. That's quite a bit different than saying they will be safe. Freudian slip on your part?

I have to say, I honestly believe Amity is fine. We definitely go out of our way to please the current students and focus on maintaining our current student population and giving quality lessons.

Lemme get this right: you believe your current employer is fine based on nothing more than a reassuring email and a gut feeling that you think you're doing a good job? By the way, pleasing customers and giving quality lessons are quite often mutually exclusive concepts when applied to eikaiwa.

Can it be done in Japan? Maybe. But I am not so sure it will happen in our lifetime.

This is a country that doesn't even run basic criminal background checks on ALTs in the school system. I'll vote for such changes to happen about ten minutes past never.

I have taught Corporate classes for the last 5 years for GEOS. Like another poster got the call 21.30 Weds not to turn up for classes today. Thoroughly respect the work Shawn of the Dead/Dying has achieved here. Killing GEOS or gloating about it? Not Guilty. Has been the 'go to' source for ages.

Dumb to stick with? Yep. Alternative options? Maybe. Can't get laid elsewhere (CGLE syndrome) likely. Unqualified? Nope. Screwed? Yep. Saw writing on the wall? Yep. Told major corporation employed to teach at? Yep! ("We trust GEOS. It is a big company") Working now? Nope.

I have met and like the people I have dealt with from Tokyo, but feel I have taken a bit too much up the arse to be comfortable with ie owt.

"We apologize you all of these troubles and confusions.
Attached is the explanation I got from GEOS.
This happened suddenly and I apologize that I couldn't inform you this earlier.

As you see the attachment, basically our corporate classes will be succeeded by G. Education.
But before we restart the classes, we have to ask each teacher if he/she would like to continue teaching the classes from now on though it will be difficult to get paid for the classes you taught till April 20th after your last payment.
Then we need some time until everything gets ready.

So we are sorry but we will cancel all the classes from April 21st(Wed.) to May 5th (Wed.)
Once again there is NO class till May 5th (Wed.).

All of us in our division were dismissed.
At this moment we don't know who will succeed this position but someone in G Education or someone in our division will continue will inform you of the details from now on.

I got a special permission by the Administrative Trustee to inform you of this as no one explained any to you.
I can't enter our office or answer your phone calls or your e-mails without their permission.

I would like to apologize you once again and express all my appreciation for your hard work and kindness till now.
For a while I may help someone who will succeed this position if he/she requires any information about your classes and you.

Thank you so much."

Signed be the 'manager' I have been dealing with for the last two years.

May the bun throwing begin

OK, I spent the whole day (or the parts of it where I wasn't stuffing my face with cookies in a desperate attempt to feel better) researching online about G.Com, considering that my school will open tomorrow, they will presumably be my employer.

But the way I saw it, these people are NOT to be trusted.

They knew for months that this was coming and during this time they have been lying and deceiving staff and students, I know business and money matters can get ugly, but this behaviour is just... Dirrrrrrrrty.
When they took over Nova (from what I gathered online, I haven't been in J-Land that long) they said they would keep schools open and not fire anyone, guess what: CowSh*t.
They told teachers to wait a month... Only to call some teachers on December 23rd and Xmas eve and tell them "actually... no job, sorry dear". Really, Christmas eve?! After a month at home when they had given employment promised...
The teachers who did stay, apparently many quit over the next weeks, not going to speculate about the reasons, but one can imagine... Anyway, the turnover was so high that G.Com rang up the teachers that had been given work promises (in November) and subsequently the boot (in December) asking them if they would like to come back!!! Some did bend over, others told them to stick the job offer where the sun doesn't shine all that much.

And now... What do we have?
1) No pay for last months work
2) 7 days pay on the 15th (and will they pay us golden week? Any G.Educ teachers here that can explain the work conditions at that place, regarding pay, holidays, absences, giving notice, do teachers share apartments, etc...)
3) Apartments... I don't even want to imagine the eviction process, those people in schools getting closed.
4) We start a new 3 month contract... With all the implications: not only do we not get to take a paid holiday (and let me figure this out, they give me a 3 month contract with no holidays, and then, IF they give me another contract I can't use a holiday in the first 6 months, so 9 months with no breaks, NICE, very classy. Oh yes, not to mention that all holidays from previous contract(s) are lost and any holidays already approved will be unpaid holidays. More things... I was waiting to be transferred to another school, I guess that won't happen now as I haven't fulfilled a years service.

All this to say... I am a firm believer in history.
Shit happens and then it happens again. They have done it once, they will do it again.
I cannot trust someone who f*cks me over, and if you don't call this weeks actions pornographic... Then I don't know...
They have forced us into a corner, they know we have been working a whole month with no pay (Native teachers, as the Japanese teachers get paid on a different date if I am not mistaken, but still, no pay for a while), and they just throw this on us, knowing that it is bad timing in all senses: Golden week is upon us, Hiring period pretty much ended 4 weeks ago, the only jobs to be had now are the ones others didn't want, and if they didn't want it, then it's probably not all that. They will for sure present me with a working agreement which is not in my interest and probably ask for a 4 month notice - on a 3 month contract, hell I expect all kind of shit now.
They know many people are desperate and they are counting on it, they expect us to be nice little flock of sheep and just be guided by the dog, or pig if you got to see that movie.
I applied to jobs today, got a few replies by email and two phone calls, got an interview for Monday. They asked me why I was leaving and I told them the truth: that the company had gone bankrupt and we were just told to leave the school. I told them I didn't know what would happen, I had no info. The people on the phone understood the situation and seemed to know that that is how it goes (maybe they had experiences of the nova kind).

Oh, by the way, did anyone else find it odd/funny on Wednesday? The Japanese was like 10 minutes long and then the woman (I have no idea who she is, she didn't actually present herself) would come, read very slowly and gave us two sentences. It just reminded me of that lost in translation bit, where the translation is completely off.

Anyway... I will go to work tomorrow, my school is opening and I will teach my students (IF THEY SHOW UP!)

If your school is closing and you have a good relationship with your students, I sincerely suggest that you consider picking up the pieces and making the most of it. If you are in an area where you can do it (and you have the Japanese skills for it) rent out a space and set up your own place... I know it may sound impossible, but that is how many of the schools out there started. Or like someone said, approach a school and get an agreement to use their space to teach your students.

Good luck to us, and try to keep updated info on what is going on... It's a real blackout on information and we can get more info from each other, as no one else seems to care about us or our students.

The domino continues...The first morning after the announcement, my e-mail box was a little more full with all the Japanese contacts I know who do not go to GEOS right now...They wrote "Did you hear about GEOS going bankrupt? It is all over the news..." This does not bode well for the Eikaiwa. It is already on thin ice and with really low enrollments, a strong company would have a tough time.

Aeon is next on the block. We will see what happens.

theyeshaveit, i know that expression very well. And i agree with you. The Eikaiwa industry needs to reform itself. Some have suggested that it be reformed by the government. I don't necessarily agree with that as Japanese people have clearly being buying the product for years so it was clearly a successful business model for a long time. Where companies like NOVA and GEOS failed is that they didn't adjust to the times, they continued to do things exactly as they did in the Bubble era. Governments shouldn't have to bail out companies because they fail to change with the times, they should be prosecuting the people responsible for it. The other Eikaiwas should wake up and start offering a larger variety of courses. Sure potential courses like a "grammar" course probably wouldn't be all that attractive, but they should be there. I think (but i'm not sure) berlitz has been offering a wide variety of courses for years. Of course the major difficulty for Eikaiwas is convincing the populace that they need more than just conversational english!

As an overseas GEOS insider (now ex), I have been something of a Let's Japan addict for the last few months. It's now time for me to go cold turkey, move on and get on with my life.
I'm grateful for the truths that have been posted here and I've enjoyed the informed speculation. The mass of totally uninformed speculation on Let's Japan has been sometimes amusing and sometimes annoying. I don't have much respect for those who slag off named people on the internet behind a cloak of anonymity. I don't think that's very brave.
I have even less respect for those who delight in the collapse of GEOS. Yes, there were always things wrong with GEOS, but a lot of good people worked very hard to make the company successful and to deliver a worthwhile service to our students. A lot of decent people are now without a job or in fear of losing their jobs. I don't think that's at all funny.
I have mixed feelings about the fact that some Let's Japan readers enjoyed my little Hitler video. I made it as a private joke for a few friends and never intended it to go viral. I do hope that K and his children never got to see it and I apologise to them if they did. Yes, K has a lot to answer for, but he is a human being and I suspect that he is now suffering more than enough for his sins.
Best of luck to ALL ex-GEOS insiders. I hope things work out for you.

Sure, 2ch is a hive of scum and villainy, but the 2ch commenters who are blaming the teachers are not doing so because "the Japanese will blame anyone other than themselves", they're doing it because they have no window into what goes on behind the scenes at an eikaiwa school. When you're a student, and you don't personally know teachers, what they teach, and how they teach it, are pretty much all you know about the school. If a teacher is teaching poorly, if you don't have information about the underlying system, all you really see is the teacher, and therefore you blame the teacher. It sucks, but that's the way humans generally are.

If it helps, think about it this way: Do you really imagine that someone who knows about all the crappy school enforced items would, when complaining about the school, ignore all those items in order to complain about the teachers? If you went to a crappy restaurant, and the food sucked, you'd blame the chef. If you knew that the restaurant manager insisted that all food be overcooked, that half-rotten ingredients be used, and that sugar be used instead of salt, would you ignore all that and complain only about the chef just because the owner was the same nationality as you? No. If someone complains about the chef, it's because they don't know about how the chef's hands are tied.

Dudes, I realy feel sorry for you GEOSES. I don't know how people can say the writing was on the wall because we all knew Nova was fucked but Geos pay was only late once and then it was all over. I just say a full time ALT gig for 175.000. 4 years ago I was getting 340.000 for working 5 days a week, plus coporate classes I could make an easy 400.000 working 4 days a week. I reckon at best I could make 300.000 now 5 days a week. Can't you see english education is pretty fucked in Japan. Japanese don't have money any more as they are no longer a nation a savers. In 10 years the rate at which they save is even less than the US these days. So basically no one is going to have the money to pay for 8000 yen for a one-to one class. I spent a few days looking at job sites in Japan thinking about going back to Japan but though nah, the money isn't good enough and now this shit happened so its just got worse 100 times. What happenes to those stupid gaijins that are married, ( nothing wrong with that) but stupi enough tohave kids and then stupid enough to get a house or car loan when they had hints that goes would go down, what the fuck are they going t odo now? Dudes I tell you Japan used to be easy money it still is easy money but for the next 3 months it will be fucked because everyone will be scrambling to get a job and employers know they can charge bottom dollar as most gaijin will be happy enough to get 150.000 yen for full time ALT. I tell you if I owned an english school or haken gaisha I would offer jobs for 150.000 yen full time and I know although I'd get lots of losers apply I could still find someone nice enough to smile and write I am from America or something like that on the board. That's just a fact the other fact is that GCOM is going to make GEOS look like the best job you ever had. They will drop the wage, they will stop nearly all holidays, last obon they didn't pay and just closed the schools and deducted money. Gcom is a cunt of a company. Better get you credit card limits maxed out and get on the phone to you mummis and daddies becaue most gaijins will probably need a bank transfer. I know when I was in eikaiwa I spend every penny I had.

04:00

Spoken like a true North American manager. I know. I am insider, too. As an insider in NA, I could tell you lots...There were a lot of people who worked hard...but also a lot of people who worked hard and stupid. They had to work so hard because a) GEOS Japan and Kusunoki BS and b) sheer attitude that they were the big bad manager that everyone must bow too (or staff that worked beside the manager in those shitty offices). Yes, I am speaking mostly of certain GEOS manager in North America. Not all, but too many were like this. They let the manager title get to their heads (most were only average teachers beforehand with not management education) and half of the GEOS problem can be attributed to this...If a teacher or staff member had a great idea, the GEOS school manager would do just the opposite. Why? because HE/ SHE was the school manager, that's why! Oh, and the North American managers who talked behind everyone's back, whether teachers, staff or visitors...Well, you got what was coming to you on this board and with GEOS now.

I also saw teachers, staff, and, service providers getting screwed out out of overtime and invoices all in the name of the great one, Mr. Kusunoki. There is no excuse for this. For the dirtiest of the GEOS North American managers (not all), or the ones who were ignorant or Yes, Men/ Woman right to the end, sorry, I have now sympathy for you. I saw and heard too much.

By the way, it is very easy for an insider to identify who you are 0:400. There are only so many managers who quit/ were let go in the last year or so at GEOS NA. I know. ;-)

I can believe it if they were dating. Quite a few dated at least one of the students. In my school, one student dated nearly every male teacher for a short time, ha. However, doing it without the consent of the woman would most likely have resulted in a major, immediate complaint. Nova teachers, even trainers, are definitely not in a position of power, so students have no fear of reporting such shit.

Btw, I teach in Kansai. Perhaps the situation is a bit different in other areas.

GEOS and Nova didn't collapse simply because students didn't think they got quality lessons. They had bad business models. If it had been a better business model, they could have easily adjusted, closed a few schools, hired fewer new teachers, etc. Perhaps Aeon and ECC are prepared for that and will remain fine or not. It's hard for those on the English side of things not at the very top to know such details.

"Can't get laid elsewhere (CGLE syndrome) likely"
I think eikaiwa schools help in meeting women, but you're not doomed without them especially in a big city.
In regards to Japan as a whole, compared to your home country, the women here are not that easy anyway unless you're going to foreign bars every night. I honestly got hit on far more in my home country, found sex came much quicker after meeting someone (where loads of alcohol isn't involved), less games, easier to keep in touch, etc. Maybe the average woman wasn't as attractive, but on the other hand, barely any women here can speak English (especially the better looking and younger they are). This may not be a problem if you're fluent in Japanese and don't plan to leave, but then you'll have a problem if you do want to leave with your gf/wife who can't speak/understand English.
And guess what country ranks the lowest in sex frequency and satisfaction? http://www.durex.com/en-CA/SexualWellbeingSurvey/pages/default.aspx

But first they had to have intelligent managers!

Your experience is the exact opposite of mine, You dont understand Japanese or the way they think. you expect everone to speak English. It is so easy to get laid in this country. It is easy to get a BJ in Japan but it is hard to get rid of one.

Are you meeting these women using English or Japanese? In an eikaiwa school, at foreign bars? Of course your odds go up quite a lot if you're able to speak Japanese well (as I said before). Though that's easier said than done. I recommend studying it a lot before coming here as you'll find it hard to schedule classes and find that they can become quite expensive, not to mention all the distractions in daily life.

LOL. Now, the truth comes out. Ninety percent of you "couldn't get laid in my own country" horndogs came to Japan to get rid of the blue balls. No wonder you could not focus on teaching.

l

I do not deny the unpleasantness of your experience at your branch. However, I think that you are still moving from the specific to the general. That is, equating what you experienced at your branch as being typical of the client base as a whole. I can't agree with that. However, I did agree with you that eikaiwa has attracted people for other reasons than English learning and would also agree that the sales staff of Eikaiwa have been fully aware of this and played to it.

In the case of the micro economy that your branch was situated in, this obviously included soliciting the custom of the mentally ill without regard to the implications and responsibilities of doing so. In my particular branch we were very close to a Gaidai. The emphasis there was on attracting the student set, and hence I suspect there was a greater tolerance for loose behaviour at my branch than may have been the case elsewhere.

During the year I was at Nova we had three people that I know of with serious mental disorders attend the school. Whilst running the classes concerned was difficult to say the least, none of them engaged in disruptive attention grabbing behaviour at the level you describe. The attention grabbing behaviour that I saw came from relatively sane people and whilst antisocial at times, was no more so than some of the antisocial behaviour that I saw from teachers.

Certainly, and if this is all you mean then I agree, the economics of a type of industry that was not focused on attracting all comers no matter what, but which was focused on appropriately addressing a range of different needs (including those of the mentally ill) in different packages, is hard to imagine at this time. It could happen, but even if it did the industry would not be an especially profitable one, would not attract big investment dollars and therefore could only develop very slowly.

bad business model..crappy lessons...treat teachers like shit..who went home, went online and told everyone else who might be thinking of coming to Japan, to not bother with Nova, cuz they were cunts to their workforce..

they might have gotten away with humuliating and belittling and being cheap micro-managing fuckers in the 1980's and early 90's..they thought they could just keep on treating everyone like replaceable cogs...but then the internet happened..and they soon found out that the word spread.....no new teachers...not enough classes...people cant take their lessons...they want their cash back...

collapse.

that its happened again...is just awful...but now..not suprising really.

Nova was good for the social aspect, women on tap lots of drinking and playing games with management. I worked in Fushimimomoyama, shijyokarasuma, Gotanda, and Ebisu as well as a short stint in HO in Shinsaibashi, which I hated. We had a student called Random man, a Teacher who on his last day took off all his clothes except for his tie, walked through the school and then into the street, good laugh but they fired him eventhough it was his last day, I had the most fun in Gotanda. Sex on tap, great mix off Teachers who knew how to have fun with management and fuck with them to the extream. Nova was shit but it was fun in your 20s.

I agree. One bad thing about grade school work is your clients are kids and your coworkers tend to be older Japanese people who are married and have families. At Nova, you had so many chances to flirt while getting paid, and many/most students were interested in hanging out anddating foreigners anyway. Of course, 3/4 of the customers were house wives, salarymen, and random strange people, but the others made it worth it for a short time at least. Outside eikaiwa, it's more work and money to meet ladies. As others said above, it's easier if you speak Japanese and go out to drink a lot (harder to do as a school teacher waking up at 6am everyday), or maybe live in an area with less foreigners (?), otherwise not so much.

Nope, just need a business license to open the eikaiwa. And eikaiwa's have less rules then juku's.

That is, equating what you experienced at your branch as being typical of the client base as a whole.

You're the second person to come on here and misinterpret what I said. Stop putting words in my mouth; what I said was "a substantial portion". I did not say "the majority" or even "typical of the client base." If you require more clarification as to what I meant, I meant a noticeable number of people.

none of them engaged in disruptive attention grabbing behaviour at the level you describe.

None engaged in behavior that you saw-that doesn't mean they never engaged in disruptive behavior. By the same token, there may have been far more cases at my branch than I was aware of, but either didn't hear or see it.

was no more so than some of the antisocial behaviour that I saw from teachers.

Well, I certainly never saw any instructors attempt suicide at my branch, nor did they make passes at junior highschool students, nor did they stalk any of their students and send them nude pictures of themselves, nor did they present them with gifts of pornography, prescription medication and enemas. Maybe the teachers did that at your branch, but I never saw teachers do anything close to that in the branches I worked at.

Thanks for the input Fri, 04/23/2010 - 02:05. Some good observations, but you kind of just brushed over a lot of things.

FACT: No evidence provided (company financial statements, links to websites independent of Aeon where this can be confirmed, etc)

---yeah, I got no proof to offer you there. Like I said...insider. heh.

CLAIM: Company runs at a profit every year.
FACT: Same evidence issues as previous statement.

---If you work at a school, this isn't really hard to see for yourself.

CLAIM: Aeon provides ECE (Early Childhood Education) certification.

---I said "child teaching certification," so I guess I could have been more clear. Here you go: http://www.aeonet.co.jp/personal/course/instructor.html

CLAIM: Aeon is reducing it's teaching staff.
FACT: Staff reduction can be an indicator that a company is in financial trouble. And why would Aeon have to downsize it's teaching staff if they are "running in the black year after year" as was claimed earlier in the same post?

---Other than the video game industry, the economic downturn hit just about everyone. Does reducing staff when the economy has slowed down really that strange a concept? I don't think so. That's the kind of thing the keeps the books in the black, and keeps companies from going belly-up.

CLAIM: Having professionals that need English taking lessons at Aeon is an indicator of financial health at Aeon.
FACT: NOVA had a lot of professionals that needed English on it's books as well. That didn't save it from piss-poor management and fiscal mismanagement.

---Having a lot of professionals does help a lot. People who need English are much more secure students than people who just like it. And I agree, nothing will save a school (or any business) from piss poor management.

---Yeah, we could say the same about every company couldn't we? There are OK right now......but in the future...

Granted, 2 of the big 4 have gone out of business, and that is scary news. But that was kind of my point, I don't think AEON has to worry right now. But, go ahead and dust off your resume if you like. I heard there are lots of teachers looking for work right now....

About two other questions:

1. Yup, AEON still recruits abroad. There is no office in London anymore. The New York office covers London.

2. Amity is making a killing.

AEON maintains a recruiting office in California, too.

Bankruptcy bring out the worst in people? -I think it should be the worst in people bring out the bankruptcies.

Life will go on for the spouses and unemployed teachers.- sure then it will happen again and again just about every fiscal quarter until every chain is over and out or downsized to a more manageable size . If the charisma-man spouse took time to speak in either language to their partners (beyond the "Iiiii liiike naa to. Wee doon't haave naato foorrr breakfaaast wee eeat.... iin..insert anglophone country here (please shut up they know)...Doo youu liiike J-pop?--Go ahead dispute that-I hear conversations like this all the time between two people that are very clearly dating for a while or married and that is about 70% of your conversation content-not a joke) They would realize that their spouse did not sign on to support their charisma-man at city hall. When the inevitable downfall is complete I really feel bad for these spouses in a patriarchal society that clearly make very little room for women over 30 on the corporate playground. I am not clairvoyant but I see a lot of cut off fathers in the foreseeable future. Of even worse perhaps seeing some native mothers having their children torn from them all because the house and credit history were in the Japanese sales/mid-management office workers husbands name. google that too divorce/child custody here is harsh leaving primarily foreign parents and women punished for life for falling out of love. I am sure a lot of family court cases will pop-up as part of a domino affect. One of the few upper-hands women have in family courts is they can make claims the husband does not sufficientl¥ provide-that is where some foreign soon to be ex-husbands may find themselves. So I don't think it was out of line at all for the previous post to state these men need to be men and need to make a plan.

Kusunoki does deserve to be trashed. A LOT, but you know what this is not an isolated incident (NOVA, J.E.T.s- not JET, now GEOS and I'm sure others I haven't heard about yet). Therefore any people that polished and licked his boots along the way deserve some of the trash talking too. This includes the government and industry for not setting or upholding standards, so do the students/ company clients/school systems and parents for not demanding quality, credentials and standards, also the education system for not wanting to own up to personal responsibility by doing direct hires, and the taxpayers for not questioning why are they paying taxes for this crap (Kashiwa BoE-google that), and employees who see the writing on the wall but choose to do nothing about it even if only on a personal self-improvement level, because that is what resourceful people should be doing if not for fellow teachers/office workers then at least for themselves-but I do not see this happening. Until more than one of the above mentioned people take action there will probably be the very same posts and articles all saying that same thing with different eikaiwa or educational institution name. That strikes me as stupidity ,insanity and laziness not resourcefulness.

It can happen to anyone, in any industry in this country.Your first paragraph is talking about normal family matters and the results that come about from the stresses of life if the income earner becomes unemployed. that can and does happen to anyone, anywhere. Sure it is a fact that a lot of men who come to japan are employed in Eikaiwa and the rights they have in this country are draconian but these guys have made that choice and if they cant speak Japanese or converse with their spouse then they are fools. This has nothing to do with the slagging off of Teachers, which was what I was saying. People immigrate to New Zealand, Australia and many other countries on the bones of their arses so it is no different here. people will take that risk and then they have to suck it up if it goes cactus. NOTHING TO DO WITH TEACHERS,
Ps. I suspect from the tone and anti-male vibe in your post you are a female.

@9:06

OK I take it back. My understanding of 'substantial portion' was - a lot. In the case of my school the 3 truly mentally disabled people we had were the slobbering or zombie types and certainly not attention seekers. They would barely have been capable of the kind of conduct you described. As regards the rest, the badly behaved were an often commented upon small percentage - and by small percentage I mean: not many. The same was true of the many other branches inside and outside of my area at which I worked. You don't need to see things to know what is or is not happening. Although, as regards my own account of teacher behaviour, I saw most of it first hand (not the AT in the demo lesson, however).

I believe that the level of customer behaviour you saw was not representative, but would be happy to hear from others who disagree. Also, I am quite prepared to accept that the level of teacher misbehaviour that I saw was not in fact representative.

Really, having understood you better, I am not in disagreement. Quality institutions offer different kinds of packages to different kinds of customer and are careful about entry requirements in order to maintain standards. This conflicts with the maximise sales mentality, and so one doubts if it will happen.

thanks for your response (really) sure some truth here but my gender aside, unfortunately 80% if not more of the eikaiwa industry are less-motivated white males. I like your response (truly) although I disagree with (absolutely) nothing to do with teachers-until we- all together- male, female, US,Can, Oz, UK, caucasian and non-caucasians proactively work together to fight this then the other 20% (that very rarely join forces) of us are left here to suffer the consequences with voices going unheard-no wait IGNORED as it all unfolds-male and female. sure my reply was long winded, but I was saying we are all (myself included) on some small level to blame because not one single group that I mentioned in previous post are getting together en-masse working to improve any of this in a consistent manner, until one or more sector does it's just going to be same thing over and over again. I have tried to hold my ground with management types here-which only got me slapped in the face. I have done research as well as consulted and seeked legal and organized help-but I am the very extreme minority (in my experience) so that really means f~&k all if most of the teaching community here just worries about what izakaya eveyone is meeting at.

You are right there are some good teachers that are not slagging off that are not to blame-unfortunately we are not working together and when we do we are shunned for it, and shoved (either gender race not important) in the background and disenfranchise us so our screams are less audible- so until a group of people from any of the teams in league eikaiwa get together and stand up and refuse to sit quietly-nothing will change-which is what the latter paragraphs were trying touch on-the first paragraph was to illustrate very long winded that yes these people do need to make a plan-I have been out there for 3 years they are just living with their shougannai mantra with no plan and a "I'm a white anglophone male I will find anther job" can do attitude-which world wide more and more everyday is not flying as high as it used to.

but on a side note what prompted me to respond in the first place was cause the original comment was in reference to the DoSes and ADoSes having to potentially sponge off of their wives and that they should make a plan- then your rebuttal to that post-so I took your response to the previous post as sticking up for management.

let me just leave with rephrasing if it makes people feel better- if we are of not all to blame then certainly we are responsible for trying to make improvements if not change (where I was trying to go with all the paragraphs)-so when it happens again it will be at least a little different if not better. It seems the only thing we have taught here is that you can do this again and again please to teachers, rank and file office workers, towns, and students cos we will just sit back and take it and do very little about it.

You are talking about Japan, Japan does not want to be changed at the present time and least of all by Non Japanese. that is why alot of the people you are talking about have that shoganai mantra be ceause it is a way to deal with the walls one comes up against in this country and it is the way a lot of Japanese people deal with those same walls.

Im on my 10th year here and I hav not sponged of anyone and support my family well not in the same eikawa type job but still teaching and I did start in Eikaiwa and had stints in management not related to Teachers or teaching.

My advice is make your own paradise here work for yourself surround yourself with positive people not the whingers because you are in for a hard grind if you try to change systems or ways of thinking. You dont need to become Japanese but you kind of need to understand the Wa aspect of interacting here. Many of the Managers and Teachers that have come, have done so with short term goals and never last long term because in the end Japan grinds them down and they end up going home to enter rehabiltation Clinics due to the booze and womanising screwing up their brains.

I am currently working for myself. and good on you for doing the same.

in my experience here there are Japanese people who do want change also in my experience (real life and minor activism related) many do fight for us and do not stand down even when they themselves are at risk-I have seen this with my own eyes. My husband and his family (here) tell me many tales of back in the day not so long ago when people did what was right according to most Japanese I surround myself with this Wa way of life as is currently practiced is a more recent backwards step (their words not mine)resurrection of of very outdated ideals and most people here I know here claim it was not as much this way until about late 80s early 90s.

I have experienced myself and Japanese as well who will if not get their way will be met part of the way when they stand up for themselves-which is all you can demand really. You are right in the respect that yes you do have to go head to head in a different manner than you might tactically be used to but with perseverance it can be done with some minor result-not the ideal one but one none the less.

Japanese and foreign corporate entities working together to screw everyone in their paths and we foreign and domestic just sit back and take it-doesn't sound very wa/zen/equal/just/peaceful or fair to me. Japanese not wanting to change I just do not entirely subscribe to that- any first world country in the game today is there because they have changed (good, bad and indifferent) within the last 50-100 years.

so I guess in the end we both have valid points, but as for both of us they are only points until people ask consistently for change.

BTW- in reference to you not being a sponge-if you took my previous posts as say you specifically are one of these I have certainly not gotten that from what you posted or intended to imply you were that person.

Just a few points:

If the charisma-man spouse took time to speak in either language to their partners... Go ahead dispute that-I hear conversations like this all the time between two people that are very clearly dating for a while or married and that is about 70% of your conversation content

You are forgetting one fundamental fact: no one is forcing Japanese women to date foreign men. They do that of their own free will and accord. If it isn't a problem for the Japanese women involved, it shouldn't be a problem for you. I'm sure they would be touched by your concern, but this is obviously a sore spot with you and in reality has absolutely NOTHING to do with the collapse of GEOS.

They would realize that their spouse did not sign on to support their charisma-man at city hall

And what information are you basing this assertion off of, aside from your own glaring bias?

I am not clairvoyant but I see a lot of cut off fathers in the foreseeable future.

No need to comment on the delicious irony of this statement.

You made some decent points in your second paragraph, but it was lost in the tidal wave of anti-foreign male bias of your first paragraph. In fact, you should have dispensed with the entire opening paragraph, because it was essentially irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Sure countries want to change but I do think Japan is special and the way that the Wa thinking comes into it is a fundamental point in the way Japanese do business and the way they play on the this is our culture, to justify the intrepidness (read dilly dallying) of any action to any problem that comes up. Look at they way Geos was run into the ground, because they wouldnt listen or accept outside views.

It may change but I think for the time being Japanese like us to think of them as a dilly dallying procrastinating time consuming people because it suits the way they want to do business in the current enviroment. The Majority of bussiness in Japan are cutting back internationally because they are being forced to, concentrating domestically, which is going to put Japan back in time when the world economies return to relative calmness because the days of accomodating dilly dallying Japanese companies because they had large amounts of cash is over. there are more realistic countries to do business with. The resut will be a shrunk economy relying on domistic activity to survive. Only the stron will survive. Make your paradise and be happy with it.

no it was not a previous poster stated it first.

I am basing it on women I talk to both single and married. mainly two single mom's I know one that is working two jobs cos husband is not stepping up to the money earning plate. Bias comes from what is seen and practiced.

no one is forcing these women but they sure are advertising eikaiwas as a place to meet men. most recent case and point met woman the other day cvrying on the phone in broken English begging for her teacher to please help her or at least answer her calls and not to avoid her-after having coffee with her turns out she was pregnant and peaced when he found out-She had a problem with that, a big problem. I do not care what that persons excuse could have possibly have been no excuse for that anywhere-do not tell me people here are not taking advantage of this. I see it all the time. I can not even count how many co workers talk schmack about their girlfriends of wives- "she does what I tell her when I tell her" being the nicest one I have heard.

Glaring bias?-you mean that people of color other than really white I have yet to see in a management position anywhere I have come across? Or do you mean for example a recent Berlitz dress code request stating women should wear skirts? Or..a friend of mine a Parisian born and bread person was fired for not being native French speaker cos she had African heritage...is that the bias you mean? not clear on what bias you mean exactly. There are just so many, just wondering why it is ok for you and others of like mind to act or speak on out that bias but not for women or other minorities? just curious as to why when you (plural) the preferred minority says it it is regarded as opinion but if a woman, forward thinking Japanese, or another minority says something it is bias? I did not realize I would have to account for everything in my life that I have sees, heard and witnessed to make an opinion more easier for you...Wow wait sec do you mean that type of bias? oh I get it now.

read it again that would be more specifically anti-white anglophone male with the "the world owes me cos I was born white and speak English" attitude and not entirely males or anglophone males on the whole would be a more accurate assement.

a fundamental fact your forgetting-longer term foreign residents of both genders have to deal with backlash when most of these people peace out and talk about Japan back in the day at the pubs/bars. no it is not GEOS related you are right, but it was related to previous comments on eikaiwa fallout on the whole on this thread-and GEOS of other it is just same thing happening almost to the letter over and over and to not look at the industry on the whole each and every time is not addressing the bigger issue-which in a way agree with it or not IS THE discusssion.

so thanks for reading and good night.

your right on that one

And this is related to Geos... how?

I thought when you replied to a comment, it would refer to that comment. One more time...
Regarding the Eikaiwa Teachers Are Models Of Decorum link- This is related to Geos... how?

Its like a nuclear war, there is fallout all over the place get over it and just go with the flow man. GEOS IS DEAD!!!!!

Read the previous posts that I was responding to on this thread if you like. That is for you to do on your own I am not your parent or secretary. I said my opinion and the previous poster stated theirs-you stated yours.

Should you choose to read back and if you can see the link between Eikaiwa downsizing/collapse on the whole and the relationship to two previous posters comments then we should be able to banter properly. I said what I had to say which Ughhain for the 3rd and last time was in reference to a two previous posts ON THIS THREAD-I do not need to further justify this for you do that on your own if you require further edification-I am sure you will find it has much to do with GEOS as you questioning some random online post.

if my last comment was in error than I apologize to all involved. Yeah that is strange it should go to the post that you are replying to, could cause an unneeded argument.

again if that is the case then I am sorry to both parties, I thought that was response to my last post.

I am basing it on women I talk to both single and married. mainly two single mom's

Two women. Hardly an adequate sample size to be passing off sweeping generalizations on the foreign married/committed male teaching population.

no one is forcing these women but they sure are advertising eikaiwas as a place to meet men

Once again, no eikaiwa forces Japanese women to date foreign teachers. They do that of their own free will and accord. And even if eikaiwas do use that approach to boost their enrollment (and there is ample evidence to suggest that; someone wrote a PhD dissertation on eikaiwa in Japan-University of Kentucky I believe, and there have been articles posted about this on this site), what are you proposing? That male foreign teachers be forbidden any contact with Japanese women in order to remove the temptation of getting involved with them and thus spare them any possible problems such as the one described in your teary, touching, heart-rending anecdote? Sorry, that was tried once already-at NOVA, and their "non-socialization" clause was famously struck down as being illegal. Not only that, in practical terms if you are a foreign guy over here, there isn't a lot of choice as to whom you can date or marry. Outside of Tokyo ex-pat communities are pretty small-it's not like there are sizeable communities of women from various countries all over the place.

read it again that would be more specifically anti-white anglophone male with the "the world owes me cos I was born white and speak English" attitude and not entirely males or anglophone males on the whole would be a more accurate assement.

I just want to make sure I understand you correctly: you claim that all of the bias-related and discriminatory actions you list are perperated by Japanese companies in order to ensure that a select minority of white, Anglophone (that's specifically Anglophone, not Caucasian males in English-speaking countries of French, German, Dutch, etc descent) male teachers because said minority demands such treatment due a skewed world view? Is that about right?

You need some perspective.

I

COMAPANIES.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

basing it on more than two people-again do I need to post my autobiography to spoon feed you? I was just merely citing a few examples. please don't answer that.

You want to mis-cite, and say I said Japanese companies, were done here. really. not a game really were done here. I am not even playing with false accusations.

over and out straight up and down.

got nothing to say to someone who is just trying to solicit an arugument.

This is not a women's studies class. Please let's get back to GEOS. God, some people do not know when to shut their politics up. Save us your agenda.

By the way, Uri Carnat, VP of GEOS (and school manager of a shitbox of a school), is telling is telling other managers and their staff to shut tv f up about what is going on. Hence the silence about NA operations. Now if someone were able to spill the beans on what will happen to GEOS NA on here that would be interesting. ;-)

Damn autocorrection. Last post should have read "Uri is telling staff to shut the f- up..."

By the way, where is that Ur Carnat guy? Where are all the assertions he was making about everything being all peachy at GEOS? Silent, which is odd for him from what I have heard. And I heard Rita Chen suddenly left the company. I would too if I were the marketing coordinator of a company that had obviously failed at marketing...

NO you are right it is not a womens study. Ugghain responding to a previous post that was posted yesterday and earlier today. so my post are just a relevant as questioning the North American affiliates seeing at the site is "Let's Japan". So including me not very many of us innocent in only talking about strictly GEOS and what is happening to the people here

But I think since this keeps on happening at Eikawas maybe we should look at the whole industry and not just GEOS and how rather this could be prevented in the very near future that might be more helpful-myself included-name one post here that helps anyone in the industry or anyone that is wondering if they have a job after golden week? I do not believe there is a one. What is any of us doing to help/prevent or alleviate-not very much. and when someone does that then we can feel free to complain about content of posts.

fair and understanding has a point that it is over and done and maybe we all should move on in a more productive manner.

maybe someone can post useful information or links such as where one could go for 80% of their backpay? or how to get the ball rolling for collecting unemployement? Who is hiring elsewhere even in other sectors?

Thread cop alert @ 23.49 and 23.52 Geos alone is VERY boring especialy NA Geos, Mr Thread cop in case you had not noticed the thread is The fallout, which means that there are no holds bared and it makes for interesting debates, so go back and patroll the other threads. I mean patrol. or do I?
