December:
Taro Aso, economic genius: Give workers a raise because I said so.
Meanwhile, back on planet Earth:
Canon to slash Oita workforce by 1,100
Honda cuts more jobs; Toyota to halt output
Major steelmakers mull temporary shutdown of furnaces
Japan in worse shape than feared
The sound of politicians trying to kick start the economy: Govt adopts 2 tril. yen plan to boost jobs
The governments of Japan and Ibaraki Prefecture: We're up to our ears in debt; let's build an airport that the airlines aren't interested in and in a location where there is no train service, no planes, and no customers.
TV Tokyo:
Brain-killing video:
Lawson: Indulgences now on sale! Absolve yourself of your ecological sins!
O.C. Welch, owner of a Ford dealership: It's the fault of traitorous American consumers who buy "rice ready" Japanese cars that the US auto industry has to be bailed out has failed.
Jason, Yet Another Gaijin in Japan: I don't know what caused the global economic meltdown, but if eikaiwa teachers want to take working in Japan to the next level, they might want to consider working as a taxi driver, or a factory worker, or a convenience store clerk, or an electronics salesman, or maybe even work in a regular office building.
UPDATE: Debito thinks the article is grand while Adamu at Mutantfrog freaks out over it.

Laughing all the way
That last one is a riot! How on earth is driving a taxi taking things to the next level? He might have a point if he's talking about poverty. Why would anybody with a decent level of Japanese even think of a taxi or a combini clerk?
Adamu gave the guy a real smackdown, but he needs to have a beer and chill out. He's a bully picking on a weakling.
There's no shame in driving a
There's no shame in driving a taxi. Not sure what Japanese cabbies make, but in London it's not out of the ordinary for (black cab) drivers to make £60k a year. If that's not a step up from an eikaiwa salary I don't know what is...
£60k a year doesn't sound
£60k a year doesn't sound like the norm and I'm pretty sure taxi drivers in Japan don't haul in that much. Salaries aside, it's highly unlikely that some young eikaiwa punk with questionable Japanese skills is ever going to be seen driving a taxi a Japan. Jason's blog is ridiculous because its premise isn't realistic.
In Osaka I have seen taxi
In Osaka I have seen taxi jobs advertised with 4 million yen per year as renumeration. Definitely not 60 000 squid.
Just did a back of the
Just did a back of the envelope calculation and £60k is over 8 million yen a year! Sweet job is you can get it.
P.S. Those cunts in the Tsukiji video need a good ass-kicking.
All I can say about that
All I can say about that Hitler video is WTF?!?! Idiot bimbo chicks who musta failed History class, and the clowns working for the TV network`s QUALITY CONTROL section.. apparently this made TV again, where apologizes were sent out - but the simple fact that that had to happen, is just beyond the realm of comprehension.. i really question shit in this country sometimes... especially the quality of TV!
Keep Idiots Out of the FISH MARKET
I don’t blame the Fish Market people for being up in arms:
(a) Drunk British Tourists, patting and licking tuna destined for human consumption – hygiene risk. Those fish predominantly get eaten raw, for crying out loud.
(b) Eikaiwa nerd, thinking rules in Japan don’t apply to him and stringing a few words of rock ape Japanese together gives him the right to work between the raindrops without getting wet – hygiene and occupational and safety hazard.
The drunk British Tourists – fine – you see them in every country around the world, and God bless them – it is the Japanese fish market operators fault for not having proper barriers separating the public from the production line (you would not let drunk people with cameras, walk through the production line of a peanut butter factory, for example – well, along a caged or well defined walk way, wearing hair nets, gloves, and sterilized boots – may be).
The young nerds joy riding – I blame eikaiwa for that phenomenon – which makes talentless and clueless jerks, who do not have the maturity or intelligence, to quite understand the superficiality of their “sensei” status, and who have no fluent capacity, to decipher Japanese flattery, initially feel like “rock stars”, who can do as they please. Japan, a country full of strict rules and regulations, literally and culturally, becomes a play ground for such wankers, since such a broad allowance, is made for non-Japanese, by the Japanese. Those pea brain jerks milk that phenomenon to the maximum, without fully understanding it. That is, until they wake up, and realise, what their “role” truly is. Their behaviour, ironically, feeds the rather sick and perverse eikaiwa industry, where Japanese consumers are attracted to the safer and more predictable setting, for their interactions with “foreigners”.
Incoherent, Rambling, and Condescending mail, but...
your central argument is pretty solid. I think if a bunch of J-Tourists turned up at Smithfield Market in London, and started interrupted proceedings, the barrow boys wouldn't be too impressed either.
Trouble with most tourists is they have absolutely no imagination whatsoever. The proles need a package tour guide, to help them negotiate a hotel front desk, and the bourgeoisie can't think outside the lonely planet/rough guide box.
Jesus, Tokyo has some of the best nightclubs/peepshows/strip joints/bars/brothels, and, for the non-nocturnal culture vultures, temples, museums, craft districts. I could go on. What exactly are you DOING at a wholesale fish market at 5a.m. ?
Fish market morons
Given that some of the asinine young men in the Tsukiji fish market video clearly had some knowledge of Japanese, I would venture that they are not actually tourists. Groups of young European men don't generally holiday in Tokyo - it is too far and too expensive, especially given the current strength of the yen.
Tourists or Eikaiwa Losers?
Nah, the guys licking the fish were tourists I fink so. The only Japanese words spoken were “chotto” and “sake”, and that ain’t having “some” knowledge of Japanese, in my book.
Same with the pretty boy joy riding, but my guess he is/was an eikaiwa monkey, doing his best to convey that he had “some” Japanese language skills, which the reporter correctly identified as being a load of baloney.
Christ he made a dick out of himself. The arrogant, misguided, little fucker (typical behaviour of an eikaiwa clown, thinking he actually is a “sensei”, and is thus highly respected).
Does anyone know what his name is, and what company he works/worked for? Must admit, his attitude had NOVA written all over it.
