GEOS North America Sold to Open Hearts International College
GEOS North America Announced on September 10 that it has signed a letter of intent [PDF] for the acquisition of all 12 GEOS schools in North America by Florida-based Open Hearts International College.*
When GEOS' Australia schools suddenly closed, GEOS North America was quick to tell its students that everything was OK. That didn't work out very well, did it? Now Open Hearts is making a similar statement:
Open Hearts International College, under owner and President Jenny Nieveen, has run a successful school in Miami for over 10 years, and with the acquisition of the GEOS operations, the goal of the company is to create the strongest and largest group of language schools in North America.
Upon the completion of the sale, GEOS North American schools will retain all staff and the company will continue to offer the highest level of customer service to both students and partners, local and international. The schools will also retain the “GEOS” name as well as relationships and commitments to all agents and vendors.
Open Hearts International College and GEOS North America look forward to building on the mutual strengths of both companies, and on becoming an industry leader in North America and around the world.
It's interesting that they are keeping the GEOS name given how quickly GEOS Australia and GEOS Japan collapsed earlier this year. Other than the press release, I know nothing else about the deal. Consider this an open thread to talk about the remains of GEOS North America.
*OK, the title of this post is misleading. GEOS has not been sold at this point, but expectations are that the deal will eventually be done.

Open Hearts was supposed to buy GEOS by now...Was factored into the financial statements leaked earlier (but you probably did not see). So a delay is a failure of sort. What's holding it up is the most interesting.
As for those losing their jobs at GEOS, the person posted only about Niall Campbell at GEOS Ottawa losing his job once the deal goes through. Read a little better. OH hasn't officially bought GEOS yet; it will happen AFTER they do. The Uri guy ain't too happy about Niall's stumblings...............

Reality, this conversation with some people leaking legitimate information, while desperate managers or others try to quell the leaks by calling, just goes to show you how f-ed up GEOS is.....What a dirty, nasty, corrupt company to work for. Anyone left there either has no other options in life, lazy to find another job, or is just plain corrupt...Or a combination of all them. Seriously, this company is a sad parody of itself.
What I am more interested in, more than the actual morons in the company, are the details that matter:
1. What is the holdup in the Open Hearts sale? As someone mentioned, and verified by the actual financial documents, GEOS thought it would be sold to OH for October. October has almost passed...
2. Anyone report the passport and other personal information leaks that went on for over a year at GEOS Ottawa and no one did anything about it? Seriously needs a report to the Canadian government at least. If anyone knows anynmore, please tell us; I am very interested in reporting info too.
3. Oceana money MUST be paid back under North American laws. Will it? Does Open Hearts even know about this and the other money that was laundered over a few years? Hope they do, otherwise they are in for a big surprise soon.
A side note, Niall Cambell you better start looking for work. I heard through the grapevine also that Uri has not intention, but of course I cannot verify this for sure. He has only kept you aroound "as a puppet" untilt he sale goes through to OH. He doesn't wantt to rock the boat and create a sense of instability during this process. Seriously, you are one of the good guys.....Start looking because he never had intentions of you staying as manager from the beginning.

If I had a choice between hiring a hard working resourceful and determined type like Uri - who yes may have made plenty of mistakes, and yes may have made a lot of enemies due to generally lack finesse in the personal skills department- If I had a choice between that, and a lot of bitching whining personal revenge types who wanted nothing more in life than to pull this guy down, then I know who I would choose. In fact, the longer this tedious gossiping saga goes on, the more my respect for Uri grows. There is a lot more, over six months worth of postings by several current and former GEOS NA employees exposing Uri Carnat (and Mathew Chsholm and others), but the mere fact you would even defend a person like this, well, says a lot about you...Unless you are the little guy at the center of the storm.

Supposedly Uri DOES have it planned to oust the Scottish one in Ottawa if a sale does go through to Open Hearts. Uri hasn't been happy with the leaks that exposed the GEOS NA corruption and incompetence and never wanted Niall in the manager position (temporary because he just wanted his biggest competitor, Martha Munroe, out the door to eliminate said competition). What we have heard is SARA KIM one is ready to assume the position. Makes sense since she sells a lot (used car salesperson award awaiting!) and is KOREAN. If anyone has been watching GEOS NA lately, they would have noticed the big efforts to woo the Korean market after alienating them before. Rita Chen in Korea now, Korean manager in Toronto, elsewhere.......Yuppers!

Interesting questions on this thread for a change. No idea about the numbers, but if GEOS NA is anything like GEOS Oceania before it all closed down, won't they be maintaining the fiction that in actual fact it's a totally seperate company that has permission to use the brand name? That's just idle speculation though. Anyone got the facts?

Without Eikaiwa most of you would never have the opportunity to live and work in magnificent and intriguing Japan. Oh Hi Betty, I spend most of my time sitting in my room, hating my employer, and posting on LetJapan about how terrible everything is, so, I don't really know. One moment I was in Japan, and the next minute, I closed the lid on my laptop and it was time to go home. I think I had an OK time but well I just don't know what happened to my time. Shucks.

GEOS Montreal has only three English classes.....Numbers vary from 6 to 14 students each, and on a weekly basis....Seems many students only taking part-time, special limited-time offers provide temporary enrollment, and huge commissions given to Korean agents right now.
Anyone with further info about other locations? Student numbers? Other gossip?

As long as one of the once-largest Japanese Eikawa is still JAPANESE owned and operated, including schools still open in Japan, this thread will continue. If you haven't noticed, it is POPULAR....to the chagrin of certain GEOS employees...It is serving as a fair warning of all the corruption and incompetence that is rooted in JAPAN but just happens to also affect NA schools ands people.
GEOS Montreal (Regional Director's office) newsletter out! NO MENTION of Open Hearts buying GEOS!!! It would have been announced on there...Looks like the newsletter is very template-based, with most looking like it was written in at the last minute. But you still have to love how they are claiming to have "254 students" when the school can only hold 75 legally at any given time! And most know there are only THREE English classes currently running, so you do the math.

You have to "love" all the new teacher announcements from GEOS Montreal. Seems they can NEVER hold onto any teacher. I wonder why? *sarcasm* Better yet, she claims to be an "English teacher" but her English is not quite perfect on a public newsletter. Go, GEOS!
On a side note, anyone notice Uri Carnat is only identified as "School Manager" and not as "Regional Director" int he newsletter? Well, one has to wonder why he even has the RD title when there are NO MORE REGIONS in the GEOS empire. Little guy, BIG badge I guess.........
GEOS Montreal?
Some of you rightly noticed that last week this thread (and the board in general) went silent, with no postings and no spamming from GEOS manager types.. Well, the guy who everyone talks about on here just had another son arrive. Did anyone notice that this thread went silent/ no sarcastic remarks against teachers, former teachers, anyone who criticizes GEOS/ no spamming with CELTA comments or otherwise, etc. at the same time the Regional Director/ GEOS Montreal school manager welcomed his new baby boy to the world? You do the math. Let's just say it wasn't a coincidence. ;-)

Considering a legal maximum of 75 students Montreal is performing very well indeed! Below is an extract of the figures from the published newsletters (nationality mix in brackets). No downturn in student numbers for Montreal!!! On the contrary, phenomenal growth. Very interesting to see the wonderful growth since February 2010. Considering that Oceania went into voluntary administration in at the end of January 2010, the growth was rapid in the months ahead. Who exactly did he have to report his figures to? Who was 'double checking' the figures?
There was a 106.5% increase in student numbers between October 2009 and 2010...with 25 new nationalities!!!!!!!!!!!
Any Montreal teacher on here that would like to confirm the numbers? One must also remember that a 'booking' is not a student!
Even more amazing is that schools have cancellations!This means that to maintain such a student number they must have been receiving incredible bookings. Given the GEOS insolvency, the sale of UK and NZ schools, the Cape Town school Manager removing all the assets and starting his own school, agents who worked with all regions would have sent through heaps of cancellations.......not Montreal though....they enjoyed a and are continuing to enjoy a boom!

GEOS Montreal
I am a relatively new teacher in Montreal at GEOS, but maybe not for long after reading so much on here. To confirm the current student numbers, I can help out. I do not know exact numbers and I am not privy to any student documents. But this should help clarify things:
* There are only three English classes at GEOS Montreal right now.
* While I do not know if 75 is the fire maximum, I do knot that there is no way we could possibly hold 254 students. Especially not in three English levels. With French we are probably at 60 most, with privates, but most likely a lot less.
* The nationality mix/ percentages: from what I see at the school, these just seem to be made up. I really do not think they spend time tracking it or reporting it accurately. Probably just numbers for marketing purposes.
* A lot of part-time students. Do not know why though.

Look this is probably just scuttlebut, and I'm the last teacher who wants to start mischief, but a good friend in Montreal tell us that with the increase in family responsibilities, Kelly is encouraging Nap to look for - as she apparently described it - "a proper job, for God's sake." And it gets better, my friend says that the Ottawa chap has been canvassing support on the QT from other school managers for him to be the one to move up when Nap moves on. Now, it may all just be scuttlebutt but with the way the outfit operates - and with the OH player on the block - who knows how things might just pan out. As Mr K was fond of saying on his v-chats. It was long ago that the Nap/ little guy was prancing around saying he was going to get his PhD. in business (even though he only studied Philosophy and had to copy GEOS Australia financials and Mike's because, well, he didn't have any of his own!). Some of us know he was trying to inflate the resume (and GEOS numbers) to impress the PhD. overlords, or so he thought. January coming up; maybe new semester at school to get some of those pre-credits?

Where would GEOS fit into that scheme. Okay, Uri did manage to get his big name and "pending sale" announcement in the new Language Travel Magazine. But that news would be at least a month old. No sale I see in the horizon. Which means it is only a dead end for GEOS and time for another manager, sorry!, REGIONAL DIRECTOR, to get the heck out of Dodge. Have fun GEOS NA staff; another manager is about to run out on you just before the shit hits the fan.

Uri Carnat? I feel sorry for him because he cannot even see what is right in front of his own eyes. He is losing his Japanese students to some little school in a place called Monkland. At least another GEOS teacher knows this, but doesn't have the heart to tell the little guy. Maybe because we might look for work at this school in the future.
Other story floating around Ottawa....manager there blaming Montreal for changing and setting up new computer hosting account that allowed the massive information leaks. Guy in Ottawa claims he is not a computer expert, just an administrator and that HO manager has complete responsibility for the computer system security and not fair to blame him for the leaks. Wants HO to shoulder the responsibility but Montreal trying to shrug it off. That's the story we hear anyway. Who knows.
